TEMPORARY spectator areas will be established at Weymouth Bay and Portland Habour during the Olympic and Paralympic sailing events.

Borough waters will be open for business throughout the Games but there will be restrictions for harbour users.

The sailing events run from July 28 to September 9 and during this time, Portland Marina and the island’s sailing academy will be closed.

To help marine visitors watch the sailing, spectator areas will be established on the water with extra marine services, berths, moorings and anchorages provided.

Steps have been taken to protect the field of play and, as a result, on-water restrictions will affect visiting sailors, kitesurfers, windsurfers, kayakers, divers and fishermen.

Boat owners intending to visit or stay during the Olympics are ‘strongly advised’ to book in advance with the appropriate harbour authority.

Field of play manager Rod Carr said: “A secure field of play is essential for fair competition and the enjoyment of spectators.

“We are relying on people who use Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour to comply with the temporary restrictions that will be in place and help make the Olympic and Paralympic sailing events in Weymouth and Portland a success.”
