Firefighters battle blaze on Green Island in Poole Harbour

THIS morning’s blaze at Green Island in Poole Harbour is now under control, according to Dorset Fire and Rescue’s incident commander Ben Ansell.

Around 40 firefighters from six fire engines were taken to the island by boat to tackle the fire, which has destroyed a three storey wooden building that was still under construction.

Crews were scrambled to the privately-owned 45-acre island after 999 calls at 7.20am.

Fire fighting equipment was transported by barge, then ferried ashore using smaller vessels able to cope with the shallow water around the island. Seawater was pumped from the jetty area to tackle the blaze.

A trained fire team from nearby Brownsea Island also helped out with water pumps and other equipment.

Poole's two RNLI lifeboats were also launched for safety reasons and back up as there are so many people on the island.

Mr Ansell was unable to confirm whether the building involved in the fire was the luxury eco-holiday home planned by the island’s owner, multi-millionaire Edward Iliffe.

Back in 2010, millionaire owner Edward Iliffe won planning permission to build a luxury six-bedroom log cabin on the island.

It was to be purpose-built in Canada from cedar logs and shipped over.

Mr Iliffe, from Berkshire, bought the island in 2005 for £2.5million as an idyllic retreat for his family.

His plans included knocking down a dilapidated bungalow on the island but he said he planned to keep a Scandinavian-style A-framed timber chalet.

“Until the fire is put out, we won’t be able to get into the building itself. It’s too early to speculate on the cause but we will be starting the investigation while the firefighting is underway,” he said.

The Health and Safety Executive has been informed.

It's quite fashionable for millionaires to have their island houses burn down. Richard Branson started the trend.

Who is 'noone' and why do you want him/her in danger?

Mr Illiffe should have remained in the home counties - trying to emulate Richard Branson on Nekker Island has been a disaster.

Too much money and not enough commonsense has wrought havoc in our precious Poole harbour.

Or maybe he was being philanthropic, bringing his family down here to muddy the xenophobic gene pool.....it certainly would benefit.
