Probe launched after bones found at house in Verlands Road, Weymouth

AN investigation has been launched after bones were un-earthed by workmen at a house in Weymouth.

It is believed they may be human remains but police said that tests were still being carried out last night.

Police were called to the home in Verlands Road, Preston, just after 9am yesterday morning.

The grim discovery was made by contractors building a link extension between the garage to the front of the property.

A contractor from firm P Critchell Builders of Weymouth discovered the bones. The builder’s truck was originally taped off by police but was removed yesterday afternoon.

Building firm owner Paul Critchell said: “I was not there at the time and I am not 100 per cent sure what happened because the police took over straight away. My company is doing the work but I am just on the fringes of what is going on.

“That is all I can say at the moment.”

A neighbour, who lived at the property where the remains were discovered for more than 25 years, said: “The police knocked on the door this morning and said they’d found bones, I think they said it was a leg. I was shocked.

“The house was a good 20 years old when I moved in and the garage was there when I bought the house.

“It was built by a man called Mr Warren I believe.

“I don’t know anything about the people that lived there before me.

“I understand that the current owner was going to join the garage to the extension and make it in to a bedroom.

“They have had a lot of extensions and things done. All I had done when I lived there was to knock the dining room and the living room in to one.

“They used to have an Alsatian living there but when it died it was buried in the back garden with a tombstone, so I don’t think the bones could be a dog.

“This is the last thing I expected to happen.”

The Echo understands that part of the property is rented out and part lived in by the owner.

The owner requested planning permission to join the garage and 26A Verlands Road in April 2011.

It is believed that the garage, to the front of number 26A Verlands Road, is being converted in to a bedroom.

A neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said that there had recently been a dispute over the boundary betweenthe two of the homes.

It is believed that the owner of the property where the bones were uncovered is currently away on holiday and is due to return in March.

A woman at the address did not wish to comment.

Another neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: “This is a lovely, quiet neighbourhood and there has never been any trouble.”
