Police Olympic accommodation announcement

TEMPORARY accommodation will be built on Portland for around 220 police officers for the security effort of the London 2012 Games.

Dorset Police has agreed a further contract for accommodation at Southwell Business Park during 'the 22 busiest days' of the Olympic and Paralympic sailing events.

Chief Superintendent David Griffith, who is leading the Dorset Police Olympic and Paralympic Security Team, said: "It's going to be temporary buildings of stackable containers.

"We'll use the facilities of The Venue hotel - the catering hall and briefing rooms and some of the other rooms.

"The temporary buildings will be popped on land at the back of the building for 22 days."

It follows an announcement in December that more than 300 police officers and staff will be housed in mobile-home-style accommodation at Seaview Holiday Park in Preston, Weymouth during the Games.

The costs of the security operation, including accommodation, are met by the Home Office.

I am sure some of the locals would rent out rooms in their houses for less cost than building temporary accommodation. 220 police officers spread around the local area would have a good effect on keeping eyes on the ground....but would they get to work on time using the road network....errrr no!

OOOH the Planners not complaining about ALL the extra traffic through Fortuneswell as usual ???

Next the Academy bunch will say it proves traffic to Academy site proven !!!

Portland Port have a huge area ready for Portacabins where the old accomodation blocks were, easy security and quick access to Olympics.
Motorway construction or others large projects put this accommodation up all the time.
But then, suppose as taxpayer in the frame we must look after the poor dears.

Only hope these poor policemen get better food at the restyaurant than I did at a dinner there in May. The good news is that all these extra policemen on the island will depress the Portland crime rate and scare the criminals.

What we have to remember is that whether we like it or not(I dont)-the Olympics is happening and it does have to be policed.I am sure the police themselves arent too happy about being dumped on Portland in temporary accommodation. I think we all have to put up with it and look forward to when its all over.l saw a tv programme last night about the olympic organisers and they're a bunch of crooks by the sound of it.
Maybe SIR Seb should have his knighthood removed by the queen!

I am sure the police aren't too happy either and it is not their choice that they will have to live in temporary accomodation, be away from their families, eating junk food as I can't see the tax payer giving a daily food allowance that is going to stretch to a good quality home cooked meal! Also, are these police officers going to have any time off during the olympics and any annual leave........probabl
y not! Why do the police always get criticised? they are only doing their job. I think they do a fantastic job and should get much more respect and recognition.
