THE Portland Steam and Vintage Show is moving to Chickerell after 12 years on the island.
Volunteers on the organising committee have secured a site at Moor Farm, Knights in the Bottom, for the annual event on July 16 and 17.
The move comes amid concerns that the Olympics may limit their access to their venue of 12 years at Southwell Business Park.
Organisers have kept the name and ethos for the event and have also appealed for sponsorship and volunteers.
Spokesman Samantha Spracklen said: “Southwell Business Park, the show’s home for the last 12 years, has recently been sold.
“The committee have been advised by the new owners that our use of the show ground over the next two years would be severely restricted due to the site being used in connection with the Olympic sailing events. “After much discussion the committee decided to put a positive spin on this devastating news and the decision was made to move the show to a different venue. “A search was made for another suitable site on Portland but unfortunately there was nothing available.
“It was decided to move the show to a new site off of the island, giving us the opportunity to continue with our already highly successful and popular show.”
Mick Mulley is the main organiser and chairman of the show committee.
The 2011 show will be held at Moor Farm in association with Stephen Vine, John Hollins and their families.
The organising committee decided to keep the popular format of the show, which donates a large amount of its profits to charity.
Mrs Spracklen said: “Once again the magnificent steam engines will be the centre of the show.
“There will also be displays of other modes of transport including classic and vintage cars, military and commercial vehicles, tractors, motorcycles and vintage caravans. “Alongside will be the usual craft and model tents, charity and special interest stalls, trade stalls, fairground organs, stationary engines and the all-important beer tent.
“For younger visitors to the show there will be children’s fairground rides, a bouncy castle and trampolines. “Main arena events will include vehicle parades and the ever popular dog agility.”
There will also be a road run to Chickerell and back on Saturday night.
Application forms for exhibitors will be available from December.
Businesses able to offer sponsorship, either in the long term or a one off donation, are being urged to get in touch.
Organisers also want to hear from any individuals or groups who would like to volunteer to help on the show days. To sponsor the show or help contact Mr Mulley on 01305 822728.
