Taking a tour of Bournemouth Airport's new departure terminal

AS passengers take their first steps through the jaw-dropping new departure terminal at Bournemouth Airport, distant memories of the series of old sheds that once stood there are left at the doors of the impressive new entrance.

The £45 million investment, one of the biggest building projects ever to take place in Dorset, has seen the former departures building at Hurn transformed into a stunning modern airport facility fit for the 21st century.

With a wider range of facilities and services, the multi-million-pound transformation means passengers now have a duty free area to match rival regional airports, along with a high-quality family restaurant, large WHSmith store and seating areas in front of the apron to watch planes land and take off.

Six new departure gates along the front of the glass and steel structure ensure easy boarding with 11 planes now able to be accommodated along the newly laid apron.

“For us it is about making the airport experience much more enjoyable while still retaining that family feel that is so important at Bournemouth Airport.”

Rob Goldsmith, chief executive of Bournemouth Airport

But the scale of the work on the spectacular new building, which has been put up while the airport has continued its normal day-to-day operations, can really be seen beyond the security checks, as passengers move into the departure lounge.

After walking through a large World Duty Free shop, passengers come into the main lounge where there is a WHSmith’s, Bath Travel currency exchange point and the largest Olive Tree restaurant in the country along with plenty of seating for passengers waiting to board.

Rob Goldsmith, chief executive of Bournemouth Airport, said: “There is an immense amount of satisfaction here amongst everyone.

“To have completed this stage of the project, during one of the worst periods our industry has ever seen, is an amazing achievement.

“Of course we have had to adapt the original plan along the way, but look at what we have here. It’s incredible.

“While we are overjoyed at the reaction of the passengers who have seen it so far, it is the reaction of the staff that has blown us away. Morale is very high at the moment.

“For us it is about making the airport experience much more enjoyable while still retaining that family feel that is so important at Bournemouth Airport.”

Attention will now turn to other projects including getting three million passengers through the gates over the next few years.

Airport bosses are hoping to attract holidaymakers and people from beyond the immediate area who do not want the hassle of tackling the M25 to get to Heathrow and Gatwick.

And while the majority of the terminal is open, Rob says there is still some work to do on some of the retail areas and of course in joining the arrivals and departure terminals.

“Some things will need to be tweaked but the fact we have opened on time and on budget is fantastic.

He added: “While we accept we will never be a Heathrow or a Gatwick, we now believe we can be one of the best regional airports in the country.”

“For us it is about making the airport experience much more enjoyable while still retaining that family feel that is so important at Bournemouth Airport.”I think the photographer has an obsession with wide angle lenses.

These photos make the place look poorly designed and bad layout.

Better luck next time :D

Echo readers send your own pics! Then they will use them in next years Dorset photographic journey book without a bean going to the photographers but a namedrop. AND I BOUGHT ONE before anyone asks!

Well done Bournemouth Airport. Had a look today, and was well impressed. Look forward to continuous use of the airport with its new buildings. For those who do not know, and offer snide comments. The arrivals is part of the continuing project.

Yeah, a 20 year project!

Great at last and not before time. It's a shame the council put no investment in it years ago.

I must complain about your comment my garage is far superior to the arrivals hall and you don't have to queue for an age to have your passport checked. Oh course the majority of British passengers on a charterflight are illegal immigrants.

Used the airport end January and unless there have been massive improvements since then, we won't be using again. No drop off point close by - we got drenched in the rain. Car park poorly lit and full of pot holes and gravel - not much good for dragging ones luggage.

Still feels like a temporary building.

Cafeteria not big enough - people struggling to find somewhere to sit.

Huge shop selling expensive items and as far as I could see - very few people buying anything.

Departure lounge utterly depressing.
Uncomforable seating.

PA system useless - No one could hear a word. They called us out by seat numbers but they might as well have been speaking in a foreign language!

Arrivals hall is chilly and very unwelcoming.

2 separate carousels in arrivals. Both are used for luggage off the same flight. It's impossible to know which one your luggage will be on. Everyone was stood in front of carousel 1 whilst part of their luggage went around the the second one across the hall!

The whole feel of the place is temporary. What a complete waste of money. Everything sub standard.

Sorry but in spite of the travelling it will be Gatwick for us in future.

Preferred the old airport! At least it was quaint!

The new Terminal has only just opened you travelled through the temporary building.
I hope the airport can now attract more operators. The introduction of Flybe to Manchester is great news and opens the door to connecting destinations without the need to face Gatwick and Heathrow.

tbh, think the new pictures displayed here make the terminal look pretty modern! im looking forward to when the next phase of development will be complete; the arrivals terminal. Hopefully the 11 new stands, long, resurfaced runway and brand new terminal will attract new airlines and ultimately an airport which the town can be proud of.

“For us it is about making the airport experience much more enjoyable while still retaining that family feel that is so important at Bournemouth Airport.”Just used Bournemouth Airport with its new bits. Its all very well doing all this refubishment and trying to get more people to use it as an alternative to Gatwick etc BUT - when is the junction at the main road going to be revised?? It has always been difficult to exit right but with more people comes increased traffic: are there plans afoot to address the issue? Also- we need drop off point/s - its nightmare for families with pushchairs, luggage and babies/toddlers in tow to manoeuvre all across the gravel, especially in poor weather - same applies for those with mobility problems. Come on Bournemouth, if we really want to compete, sort the infrastructure first - window dressing is surely secondary!
