Budmouth students get their thinking caps on for Weymouth seafront challenge

STUDENTS teamed up with architects to undertake the design challenge of improving Weymouth’s waterfront.

Their ideas included a ‘living timeline’ of historic events that could be laid into the concrete of The Esplanade, a new pier and a revamped tourist information centre (TIC).

Thirty Budmouth Technology College pupils, assisted by professionals from the Architecture Centre in Bristol and volunteers from RIBA Wessex and South West Planning Aid, were tasked to revamp The Esplanade.

The Year 9 geography and English students and the professionals focused on the seafront area that stretches from the King George Statue to the Jubilee Clock.

They visited the site, took photographs of likes and dislikes and came up with ideas to make it more welcoming and comfortable for people of all ages.

The challenge included an inspirational presentation, role-play activities to think about different users of the space and cost issues.

After brainstorming, the students made 3D models of their design scheme and then each team gave a presentation.

Their designs for the public space of the Weymouth Waterfront Esplanade considered landscaping, street furniture, lighting, shelter, signage and activities.

Other concepts included maximising sea views, access issues, facilities, pupil art and sustainability.

Martin Pick, head of geography at the school, said: “The students came up with some great ideas.

“The day was an immense success, the students were given a practical demonstration in the design, bid and presentation processes while the architects were given a unique perspective of how younger generations feel about Weymouth, its heritage and future.”

Mr Pick said the project was inspired by the borough council’s plans to revamp the seafront ahead of the Olympics.

As part of the scheme, the council’s Management Comm-ittee has agreed to investigate the potential and business case for relocating the TIC to the Pavilion to provide a joint service.
