Fridge-pushing fundraiser Matthew Hollox tackles West Dorset

A BUS driver who packed in his job to push a fridge around the British Isles has been causing a stir around the hills of West Dorset.

Matthew Hollox, who is also a former Royal Navy diver and sonar operator, aims to travel 3,000 miles to raise money for The National Memorial Arboretum Appeal.

Yesterday, after more than eight weeks on the road, he wheeled his 200kg refrigerator called Sarah – after Sarah Bryant the first servicewoman to lose her life in Afghanistan – into Bridport where he was assisted by the local branch of the Royal British Legion.

Mr Hollox, 50, of Nottingham was inspired to do something to honour the fallen after being moved by scenes from Wootton Bassett, the Wiltshire town famous for honouring fallen soldiers.

He said: “The people of Dorset have been very friendly, particularly in Wareham where I raised £126.

“I must say thank you to an Abbotsbury farmer called Gabriel who kindly took Sarah up Abbotsbury Hill on his trailer while I walked behind.

“I don’t think I could’ve pushed her up there – it’s one hell of a hill.”
