A £2.5million repair fund will be spent fixing the potholes and damage left behind by this winter’s freezing temperatures.
Bournemouth council decided to plough the extra cash into the town’s road network following hundreds of complaints about potholes.
From December 1, the council has received 690 reports of carriageway defects from members of the public, and, since Christmas, 18 claims against damage to cars caused by potholes.
Charminster, Queens Park and Ensbury Park are among the areas badly affected.
As well as filling in the potholes, the council will use the money to reline and repaint roads across the borough.
Cllr Robert Lawton, cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “The recent spell of cold weather has undoubtedly had an adverse effect on the road conditions, with the cycle of freezing and thawing water causing road surfaces to break up and produce potholes.
“The investment will mean we continue this maintenance and deliver a road network up to the standards expected by residents and motorists. By carrying out this investment in our road structure we are investing in the future prosperity of our town.”
The £2.5m has come from a recent successful claim for backdated VAT and from the local transport budget.
Officers are currently working on plans to prioritise the roads in greatest disrepair and work will start as soon as possible.
Cllr John Beesley, cabinet member for resources, said: “It has been a long time since Bournemouth’s road network has received such significant investment and I am positive this will be good news for all residents.”

Additionally, if those "middle aged selfish motorists" didn't exist, paying road tax and fuel duty, you wouldn't be living the lifestyle that the country currently affords you. Try thinking before you post utter rubbish.
Cllr Lawton The funds you have are for Highways, both carriageway and footway. Whilst these are 18th Century words they are the legal descriptions. Please stop pandering to drivers only and spend some of the money on pedestrians. The atrocious state of pavements is ignored every year so more can be spent on motorists. 30% of the residents of Bournemouth dont drive. They are the too old, too young, too poor and too green. The first and last of those groups vote. Lots of middle aged selfish motorists dont.
