Mid-Dorset Mencap group launched

6:20pm Friday 24th July 2009

A NEW Mid-Dorset Mencap group has been launched in the county town after receiving a £3,000 boost.

A gift of £1,000 was given to the Dorchester group by the Bridport-based West Dorset Mencap group to help to get it off the ground.

This figure was then boosted by a fete held at Bere Regis, which raised more than £2,000 to provide a sound financial footing for the formation of the group, which will offer facilities for people who have learning disabilities.

The fete was held at the premises of Pampered Pigs and featured music from Abba’s Angels, Merge-In-Turn and Stickleback Jack, Irish and Morris dancer demonstrations, local produce and a visit from a fire engine.

Around 40 businesses donated raffle prizes, while a bar was run by members of the rotary club and Pampered Pigs staff provided a barbecue with hog roast sandwich rolls and pork crackling.

The Dorchester branch of the group is now formally launched and will continue to fundraise over the coming months.

Mid-Dorset Mencap would like to thank all those who supported the launch and made contributions to ensure it was a success.
