Dismay as dog care scheme is rejected

A POOLE man intends to appeal after his dream of setting up his own dog day care business was rejected by planners.

Neil Stow thought he had hit all the right buttons with his proposal for day-boarding for dogs at a warehouse at the rear of 293 Wallisdown Road.

But his application for change of use was refused and now he intends to appeal.

“It would be somewhere where someone could drop a dog off at 8am and pick them up at 6pm after a day’s work and know they were being cared for,” said dog owner Neil, who has been a volunteer for Waggy Tails Rescue.

He would look after up to 10 dogs, walking them a couple of times a day and there would be an area where they could relieve themselves.

“This is an option people could use who want to work but don’t want to leave their dogs at home all day.

“Some people have to give their dogs up because there is no-one to look after them,” he said.

Neil, 33, of Canford Heath, who has a dog of his own called Pebbles, came up with the plan after being made redundant. He is determined to fight on after an officer turned down his proposal on two grounds, which he believes could have been dealt with by conditions.

Concerns were raised over the harmful effect on the nearby Bourne Valley SSSI of increased dog walking on the heath and an increase in vehicles, involving reversing on a main road.

“Natural England raised concerns over the use of the heathland for dog walking which could damage the protected site and transportation objected to the scheme, concerned it would increase highway safety dangers,” said Richard Genge, team manager in planning, Borough of Poole.

“The decision to refuse Mr Stow’s application was made in accordance with the adopted development plan and any appeal will be reviewed by the Planning Inspectorate.”

Fantastic Idea and he would do very well.We had like a Doggy Day Care abroad and it also allows people in wheelchairs to go to work knowing their care dogs can be entrusted with someone during the day,and people who always wanted a job but were at work all day. With all the animals being kicked out due to the Credit Crunch, there are people who would love to use these facilities and be able to keep their dog.
Only thing I would say is, Neil, get some dog behavioural experience as not all dogs will get on, but if you have the knowledge how to deal with them then no one should be able to refuse you.
All the excuses they give could be cured.Offer a collection service by buying a van and that would cure the traffic reversing, and by taking the dogs in a van to the local park with your doggie bags(a sackful),then problem solved!!Good Luck to him I say.

Yet again some one comes up with a good proposal. Some half wit turns it down.I note the sound remarks of the SSSI SOUND CONCERNS.There concerns can be worked on hopefully.Would the half Wit with two brain cells like to inform us how many times has the heath experienced cases of arson. With a chap like Neil walking the dogs on leads more eyes & ears on the heath.

Just how many extra dogs do the SSSI and Natural England imagine would be invading what's left of the heath for goodness sake? Such arrant nonsense...

Perhaps its because of your connection with Waggy Tails,?.They have had bad publicity in the past.

Hopefully Neil is a responsible dog walker who keeps his dog on a lead and cleans up afterwards. Many dog owners don't, hence the concerns from Natural England.
The Heathland Mitigation Fund is being used at present to take pressure off our protected heathlands and make other areas available for recreational use.

If this is " at a warehouse at the rear of 293 Wallisdown Road."
then how can "an increase in vehicles, involving reversing on a main road" be cited as an objection ?

IT'S A WAREHOUSE !

Believe it or not, warehouses do tend to have vehicles coming and going. How did the building get planning permision as a warehouse if the the road can't cope with vehicles ?
