RESURFACING works on a coastal road in Dorset wil have to be done again following a period of heavy rainfall.
A spokesman for Dorset County Council said a small patch of the B3157 near Swyre has land drainage problems that caused a newly-laid road surface to ‘fail’.
The council spokesman added that the failure came about after surface rain water lifted some of the newly-laid road surface.
The spokesman added: “Road users will have noticed a set of temporary two-way traffic signals east of Swyre.
“Works are taking place at a small site within these signals to alleviate a land drainage problem that has caused the new road surface to fail in this area. This problem only came to light after a period of prolonged rainfall after the new surface had been laid. The traffic signals will remain here until the road is patched at the end of the job.”
The spokesman said the work was being completed as part of the third stage of an ongoing resurfacing project concentrating on the section of the B3157 between Snipe Gate and Portesham.
The road has been closed in sections for several weeks during weekday working hours to allow workmen and heavy machinery into the area.
The council spokesman said that, despite the setbacks caused by the failure of the road, the entire scheme could be completed by Friday, December 12 – two weeks ahead of schedule.
The final phase of the ongoing works will begin between Burton Bradstock and Coastguard Cottages on Thursday, December 4, under Stop and Go traffic controls.
On the following day, Friday 5, the section of road will be closed between 8.30am and 5.30pm. A local diversion will allow traffic travelling between Burton Bradstock and Swyre to avoid the works by going via Bredy Road, Hazel Lane and Bull Lane.
The spokesman said the diversion would effectively allow the coast road between Bridport and Weymouth to remain open to traffic.
Works will also be carried out across the junction of Beach Road.

No doubt if the work had been undertaken ng the height of the summer season (though not last year's as it rained heavily throughout!) 100s would come on here to complain about the traffic queues, delays, etc. etc.
