KIM the cat is the newest resident at a Dorchester nursing home.
The little old – feline – lady is settling in nicely at Greenbushes after spending seven months in an animal rescue centre waiting for a new owner.
Donna White of the Margaret Green Rescue Centre at Church Knowle near Wareham said Kim, 14, was handed over to the centre because her owner had become too ill to look after her.
She said: “It’s always harder finding a home for an old animal but when we had a call from the nursing home to say they were looking for a cat and did we have one that would be suitable, I thought of Kim.
“It’s worked out so well. Kim settled in straight away. She likes all the warm places and everyone loves her – residents, staff and visitors.
“After all, a lot of residents have had animals of their own that they can’t take with them when they go into a nursing home, so they’re delighted to have Kim around. They’ve made her very welcome.
“Older cats are often quieter and just like to have laps to sit on – they make good pets. Kim is 14, but I’m sure she’s got many years of life ahead of her there.”
She added: “It’s unusual to find a home like this one. I hope other nursing homes will decide to have a cat as well.”
Tortoiseshell Kim was introduced to her new home by Angie Wright, who helps with rehoming Margaret Green animals and who has a relative at Greenbushes.
While she sorted out the details with manager Beverly Welch, Kim had a wander round the office and greeted everyone who popped in as word went round about the newest resident.
The staff and residents are so delighted with their feline companion that they held a raffle to raise money for the centre.
Donna said: “Kim is a star there, enjoying love and happiness from everyone.”
