Dog owner blasts beach survey form

AN ANGRY dog owner has blasted a questionnaire compiled by Bournemouth council to gauge public opinion on controversial proposals to permanently ban dogs from part of the town’s beach.

Dogs are currently excluded from the beach between May 1 and September 30, except certain designated areas at Alum Chine, Durley Chine and Fisherman’s Walk through to Hengistbury Head.

Bournemouth council has started an informal consultation which could see the dog-free areas of the beach extended in the summer months and dogs barred completely from the main part of Bourne-mouth beach all year round.

Copies of the proposals and questionnaires must be returned to the Town Hall by November 14.

English teacher Mike Packham lives in Southbourne and walks his dog every day along the nearby beach. He collected a consultation form from the beach office to lodge his objections to the proposals.

Mr Packham told the Daily Echo that several of the questions were “unintelligible”, adding: “After studying the maps provided for 90 minutes, we still couldn’t make head nor tail of them.

“We have spoken to many other dog walkers and none of them understands this document either.”

He has now written to the council urging it not to make any decision based on “such a flawed document.”

Sarah May, the borough’s contracts manager for seafront and business development, said: “We have had more than 200 questionnaires returned so far and this is the only complaint that we are aware of regarding the informal public consultation document.

“However, we will be reviewing all consultation feedback questionnaires at the end of the consultation period and will take into consideration any other complaints that we do receive. We would like to assure people that there will be another opportunity to submit feedback and suggestions during a formal public consultation.”

I can understand the limitations in the summer months but why the winter when the beach is hardly used. We moan enough about human rights perhaps we should start fighting for dog rights. Being a responsible dog walker who always clears up any mess my dog may cause - I cannot understand what the harm is to let dog walkers have free reign of the beaches in the cooler months. One of the biggest incentives for getting a dog is the exercise it gives you - and a bracing walk along the beach on a winters day is glorious. What's the logic to it?

The Coucil must be so over staffed they are looking for work to do - how about sending them out to pick up some litter?

Well said Julie G. I've been down on the beach in winter months and the only people using it are dog walkers. Just another easy target for the pen pushers to pick on. Dogs and man have been together for 1000's of years, but in this PC society we must all conform. Umm I hear the sound of jackboots. I suppose any transgressors will be monitored by CC TV and reported council tax money used to prosecute them. Madness!!!! Here's a thought why not have a dog walkers only part of the beach during the winter months, so then those delicate souls who obviously cannot walk around dog mess do not have to be there.

Trouble is there is a minority of dog walkers out there that give the majority of us a bad name. A vast majority of us have well behaved, good mannered dogs, sociable dogs, who's owners respect that other people use the facilities and clear up accordingly. By the same token there are those people that should not have dogs, that cant control them so should not take them to a public place like a beach but somewhere more remote - but it is always the minority that ruin it for the majority. As with any argument being put across it is always the one horror story that stick in the mind rather than the hundreds of mild mannered pets that are a joy to be with.

Bring back the dog licence to stop uncaring dog owners. If the council get there way and make this a bye law how on earth will they enforce it? . They do not enforce no cycling, no beach bbq's, no, fires on the beach, no kite flying, no travellers. The list is endless, so will this be a soft target? They display fines for not picking up but how and when do they enforce it. I get so embarrassed by people who must let dogs mess next to the bins you end up picking it up yourself but still nop wardens. Just another idle threat from the council with nothing better to do. We are trying to turn this seaside town into a nambi pambi state run by people who want a sanitised beach bleached white, no litter, no people unless wearing the right sort of clothes, no waves to spoil the beach, nobody actually using the beach. Why do people like Bournemouth and the other coastal points beacause of the alternative opportunities. If you dont want dogs on the beach, if you like your beach and surroundings a little more natural then head towards Southbourne and Hengistbury Head. You do not need to keep having consultation at huge expense the tax payer which resolve nothing.

I agree with Nick 2 - and also the % of people who want to walk on a portion of beach is dog-free.
