Bid to call time on late night bars

ASHLEY Cross residents have expressed fears the area’s nightlife is approaching a “tipping point” as a new bar fights for a licence.

Purdy’s, previously The Basement, on Station Road, would join an array of bars and pubs in the popular entertainment district, if a licence is granted.

Applicant EMUF Ltd says the premises will operate as a “café bar/brasserie”, opening until 12.30am each night, with music playing until midnight.

But residents living close to the planned new premises are concerned it could be a bar too far.

In his letter of objection to the licence application, Phillip Winton, who lives on Station Road, said: “I suggest Ashley Cross is approaching a tipping point from the point of late night activity.

“I consider the introduction of another late night venue in Ashley Cross would be detrimental to local residents.”

Mr Winton said that on speaking to one of the co-owners, he was assured noise from inside and outside the bar would be controlled.

Another letter of objection, from Station Road resident Maria Brescia, said: “We already have enough wine bars and pubs around here.”

Maggie Trisconi, owner of nearby Isabels Restaurant, said she felt the area’s bars already generated more than enough noise and antisocial behaviour.

Dorset Police, meanwhile, has also objected to granting the licence on the basis of potential crime and disorder.

The applicants say they will operate a proof of age scheme, CCTV and implement any additional measures agreed with the police.

But Sgt Lynette Gibbs of Dorset Police said she did not think the steps were adequate.

The Borough of Poole’s licensing sub-committee will consider the licence application for Purdy’s on Monday.

Ashley Cross used to be quite a laid back place to have a drink. Since certain bars increased opening hours, the atmosphere has changed for the worst, enticing troublemakers and forcing bars to employ bouncers. I avoid it now, not a lot different to Bournemouth on a weekend nite.

Ashley Cross finally has a bit of life and a growing economy- and good luck to it. Its positioned itself more upmarket than Bmth centre or Poole Quay, so hopefully the louts wont be attracted to the older 30-40 something/ divorcee crowd! Perhaps resturants and cafes may be boosted with more people about.

As for noise etc., why do people live on main roads near pubs/ bars and then complain about noise? Move! Theres plenty of places with no life in them at all.

there was plenty of life in ashley x before the late licenses were granted. What is now apparent (I live there) is that at the weekends, people who would have ordinarily gone to Poole / B'mth are making Ashley cross the nite out. Not a problemn with that at all, but it is attracting problems (drunkenness, fights) not on the same level as Poole or B'mth but its on the increase..

You dont have to live on the main road to witness this, the sorrounding areas are caught up too. On the flipside, the 30-40 somethings that initially flocked to these bars are moving onto other places as they too are perhaps fed up with the chavy atmosphere that sometimes prevails.
