Work to get under way on Weymouth footpath and crossing points
WORK to create a new cycleway and footway along one of Weymouth’s busiest roads begins on Monday.
Dorset County Council will build the new route between Chafey’s roundabout and Manor roundabout, finishing in mid November.
The first phase of work will see the installation of the crossing islands and is expected to take around nine weeks.
Highway chiefs say disruption to traffic will be kept to a ‘minimum’.
At peak times work will be carried out on the edge of the road to keep traffic flowing both ways.
But they say there may be times when stop/go boards are needed to ensure the safety of the workforce, and a 40mph speed limit will be in place throughout the works.
The project includes three pedestrian crossings following a petition set up by residents in the wake of the death of five-year-old Lily-Mae Jeffries on 50mph limit road Weymouth Way in March 2012.
