MAGNIFICENT MEN: The Red Arrows are set to wow the crowds at this year’s Bournemouth Air Festival MAGNIFICENT MEN: The Red Arrows are set to wow the crowds at this year’s Bournemouth Air Festival

The 2013 Bournemouth Air Festival was launched last night with the promise of another land, sea and air spectacular this summer.

Topping the bill, the Red Arrows and Typhoon Eurofighter will be performing three displays each.

Recognised as one of the top ten air shows in the world by USA Today, the festival has attracted nearly five million visitors since its launch in 2008.

The Royal Navy will have a bigger presence than ever before.

Among the ships will be the Type-23 frigates HMS Northumberland and HMS Monmouth. In the air will be a Black Cat Lynx and Merlin helicopters, and the Royal Marines will storm the beach from a number of landing craft in their amphibious assault demonstration.

This year’s Night Air, the festival’s evening entertainment programme, is set to be the biggest so far. Along with live music from two seafront stages, a third night of dusk air displays is being planned.

The night programme will also see the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Collingwood Beating Retreat on the East Overcliff after an unarmed combat demonstration by the Royal Marines Commando Display Team.

Also on show will be the Tutor and Tucano training aircraft, the iconic Battle of Britain Memorial Flight comprising a Hurricane, Spitfire and Lancaster bomber and the Chinook helicopter.

Jon Weaver, Air Festival Director, said: “We’re delighted to have the Reds back to full strength and the Typhoon returning for three displays, which is a first for us, is something Festival-goers have been wanting since it last appeared in 2010.

“The Royal Navy has surpassed themselves with the number of ships we’ll see in the bay.”

Confirmation of the civilian line-up will come later.

The festival runs from Thursday August 29 to Sunday September 1.

If we have six then we will have the whole fleet.

Such a shame that the "Events Department" does not care, support and assist in all the community events in our town. Hundreds of volunteers each year spend hours organising events for the community, and if its on council land they are also charged rent!!!

This "Air Display" is just another example of how bringing money into the economy over a couple of days is deemed more important than maintaining and protecting the environment for decades. The damage to the environment due to this event is unprecedented and ill considered. The movement of so much heavy plant machinery down on the sea front combined with the sonic effects from the fly passes means we are exposing the environment to massive pressures from above and below and the risk of subsidence and landslides increase. Damage to the sub stratus of the overcliffs moves down over time and is aggravated by the types of extreme weather conditions expected between now and August. The air display is a major public health and safety disaster waiting to happen. It should be cancelled until the council can assure the public that all these risks have been evaluated.

WoW a fully paid up member of the loony left, pc correct, tree hugging, drop all border controls brigade. Perhaps you should watch the show from one of the excessively large wind turbines proposed for the bay.

I hope Gary isn't depositing any litter that ends up in ground fill. I hope he is not consuming energy gas or electric during this cold weather. Man hasn't sorted out zero emissions yet. Perhaps he can help. I hope he is not consuming any minerals on this planet. No doubt he defecates quite a lot, like me...

No mention of the dear old vulcan then, has it finely been towed to the great scrap heap in the sky or can't Bournemouth afford the appearance fee .This was the one aircraft that made the airshow worth watching, if and when it attended due to weather or maintenance problems.

The visitors figure is total guess work. Each day 100,000+ people where there but they then count up each day and claim 500,000 visited for the weekend. But surely most people where there for more than one day, its not 500,000 different people.

We get all this rubbish all the time from government and I believe its just another tool to raise money.
Over the past few months I have seen no evidence of global warming which was the old name for it until things started to go in the opposite direction, now its climate change, that's a fairly open description considering this country has so many different conditions of weather.
By doing what we have been doing for the last 30 years or so is I believe interfering with nature and we should stop now.
What difference will a four day air show make anyway considering China and India are chucking out more rubbish than we ever did, if you want to preach about climate change I suggest you go to the countries which are not cutting back and leave us to enjoy our 4 day air show without you complaining.

Personally I think this is the best event that Bournemouth actually has not only for families to enjoy for FREE but it is a chance for all of us to celebrate and support our armed forces and the men and women who serve.

Totally agree and while i applaud people that are concerned with our enviroment, things need to be put in perspective and i remember last year someone posting comments regarding the possibility of the cliffs falling on people due to vibration etc.etc from the airshow surely one can find more things that are likely to happen to worry about

If you want to live in a tourist resort then you have to do something to attract families to come and spend money.

If you were running the council, the beaches would be closed in case of cliff falls or acid rain. Cyclists would be banned and dogs executed.

But of course you are doing nothing to save the planet. You used the internet to access the Echo comments sections so you must have some sort of device which has been made using a finite resource of rare metals and then, naturally, you had to use electricity to send your message.

You are the complete hypocrite.
