Travellers move on from Weymouth car park

TRAVELLERS who moved onto a council car park in Weymouth have left the site.

The travellers, who had journeyed up from Devon, arrived more than a week ago and set up camp on the overspill car park at Dorset County Council’s park and ride site at Mount Pleasant. A number of caravans and other vehicles were seen at the site. County officials ordered them to leave the site by yesterday otherwise legal proceedings would begin to evict them.

A council spokesman confirmed the group had gone, and that workers had cleaned up the site.

Borough councillor Bill White says the park and ride site is ‘wide open’ and there is nothing to stop other travellers getting on the land.

He hopes some progress can be made providing a temporary site for travellers in Dorset so they can be directed there instead.

'workers had cleaned up the site.'

Why weren't the 'travellers' stopped from leaving until they had cleaned up the site or paid for it to be done as well as paying parking fines?

According to DCC Parking Services, the travellers weren't there. They said:

'Thank you for your email regarding the Park and Ride. To our knowledge
there have been no vehicles parked in the park and ride car park as the
barriers are closed at 6pm. However, I have asked an Enforcement Officer to inspect the car park this evening.'

Stable doors and horses comes to mind.

Absolutely agree, but do you fancy the job of clamping them ? Guess you'd have to do it with a noticeable police presence .

Why do the police and the council tolerate these freeloaders? They have expensive cars and caravans, so should be made to pay the parking charges and the cost of cleaning up after them.

Shall we all take our cars there at the weekend and see if the council give us a week to vacate?
