Martial arts teacher Steve Oxborrow told terrifying tales to groom girl for sex abuse

A MARTIAL arts teacher who sexually abused a child in the New Forest has been handed an unlimited hospital order.
Judge Gary Burrell said Steve Oxborrow was “dangerous, particularly to children” after a court heard how he groomed his child victim by spinning tales of a bizarre and terrifying world.
Charlie Gabb, prosecuting, told jurors: “Whether he believed it or not, he was telling this young girl there were black shadows and red scorpions and they would get you and that he would protect her.
“And he would give her lurid details about black shadows. He gave them numbers, he gave them names, and they had girlfriends.
“He told her and she believed him and you can see if you do that to someone, you have power and control.
“He was abusing his position of trust, manipulating this young girl, vulnerable as she was, and filling her with ideas and using her effectively as a sexual outlet.
“He had convinced her that he loved her.
Eventually, Mr Gabb said Oxborrow then began French kissing the girl, encouraging her to commit indecent acts before having full sexual intercourse in New Milton.
He also texted obscene pictures of himself to the girl.
The abuse, which took place over an eight month period, came to light when her parents discovered she was in touch with Oxborrow on her mobile. He was then arrested and interviewed and admitted sexual relations although denied raping her. Photographs of his victim were found on his computer.
Judge Burrell accepted Oxborrow, 24, of Wilverley Road, New Milton, was mentally ill, suffering a psychotic illness, and unable to enter a plea.
But he had instructed a jury to establish whether the defendant had committed the acts, rather than finding him guilty.
The jury found that he had committed a string of sexual abuse charges, including sexual assault, inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and possession of indecent photographs.
Judge Burrell handed down an unlimited hospital order, under the provisions of the Mental Health Act 1983.
It means he will stay at the hospital until a successful application is made to a mental health tribunal.

.
Psychotic illness is evil. It can take the normal sane person away and replace it with someone terrible. Same body, different person.
.
Those who have personal experience of a family member or someone close to them who have suffered like this will know exactly what I mean.
.
Don't be too quick to condemn and demonise this man - it seems that he is not evil or depraved - he is very ill. I just hope he gets the right treatment from the mental health services, and that it is based on what is needed for him, rather than compromises having to be made due to lack of resources and money.
.
I really feel for the poor girl and family involved, don't get me wrong - it is very sad and unfortunate that she was in the wrong place at the wrong time and got caught up in this awful business.

We wasn't so far gone that anyone thought to report him to medical services prior, so i suspect he knew what he was doing.

So does that mean when he gets a successful application he will then have to serve a prison sentence, I hope so and also hope its a long one then this girl and her family will feel that justice has been done and be able to get on with their lives.

I hope that the fact that the police are getting better at catching them will give the many survivors of historic abuse courage to try reporting again even if they were ignored years ago. The chances are that their abusers are still going strong

The two posts above seem to show to me that the posters do not appreciate what psychotic illness is.

Lets hope for his sake that he gets the right treatment, and the right decisions made.
.
Of course what he did was terrible and being mentally ill does not make it "ok".
.
and Pooleres, yes, spot on. People suffering from psychosis live in their own world and believe their thoughts are true. It's not always harmful to others, just wrecks their own lives and it's also very hard on those close to them, it really depends on what those thoughts are. What a horrid and destructive condition it is.

How old was the girl involved? A child is defined by law as anyone under 18. She could have been 7 or 17. I'm not defending the chap concerned, but I'd like to know the full facts.
.
What a stupid question, the head line above should be a clue, does it really matter if this person was 7 or 17, it still shouldn't have happened.
Illness or not this scum needs locking away for a very long time before he can do any more damage.
Seems to me there's more concern on here for this scumbag than for the young girl.
