We'll find you - police warning to driver of Volvo XC90 involved in Jade Clark death crash on A31 at Ringwood

Jade Clark Jade Clark

DETECTIVES have warned the driver involved in the Jade Clark fatal hit-and-run crash that officers will be knocking at their door.

The tragic 16-year-old was struck by a Volvo XC90 as she rode her red scooter along the A31 near Ashley Heath on the evening of Sunday February 24.

The driver left the scene before police arrived and a £5,000 reward has been put up for information that leads to an arrest and charge. The search for the driver is now a joint investigation by Dorset Police’s Major Crime Investigation Team and Traffic Department.

A dedicated team of officers have begun visiting all registered owners of Volvo XC90’s and so far more than 300 vehicles have been eliminated in over six counties.

Speaking directly to the motorist, DI Marcus Hester of MCIT, said: “If you own or use such a Volvo XC90 we will be coming to visit you. I’m directly appealing for the person who failed to stop to come forward and help me with the investigation into the tragic death of 16-year-old Jade Clark.”

Police can now reveal they are searching for a light coloured Volvo XC90 registered between 2003 and 2007, including vehicles with 52 to 57 plates and personalised registration plates.

DI Hester added: “If you know anything about where this car is or who may have been driving it, please call us. It may be difficult to come forward with this information but imagine yourself in the position of Jade’s family if this had happened to your son or daughter. Her devastated family deserve answers.

“I am appealing to the public to search their conscience. Someone clearly knows where this Volvo is. Do you know a neighbour, friend or colleague who uses an XC90? Has it suddenly disappeared?

“Or have you noticed a change in someone who drives an XC90? Have they become stressed or been off work sick?”

Police believe the vehicle would have suffered front-end damage during the accident.

DI Hester added: “Do you work in a body repair shop and have been approached to repair this vehicle? Or maybe you work in a vehicle spares or car breaker yard and have received an enquiry for parts to repair a damaged XC90? If so please come forward – that one phone call could be the breakthrough we need.”

Anyone with information should Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Good, it looks like the police have been doing what we all asked for after all. Good luck to them

In view of the fact that the police can now be more specific about the age range of the Volvo, and the fact that it is a "light" colour, one can only assume that pieces of the debris collected during the investigation have directed them this way. What I don't understand from this though, is why they cannot be more specific as to the extent of the damage to it. Perhaps if we knew with a little more certainty exactly what damage we were looking for, the public could be even more help.

I travel the M25/M3/M27 corridor every week and am looking at every X90 I see for any signs of front end damage. I'm sure I'm not the only one, hopefully someone notices something soon.

Very public spirited but bearing in mind the density of traffic on that route please keep your eyes on the road.

The sad thing is I saw a Volvo XC90 (a black one) at the petrol station today and I immediately thought "I wonder...".
Until they find this guilty one every driver of this model car is going to be looked at funny.

There's alot of 4x4s that look similar to a volvo,if they're not sure what colour it is why so sure it's a volvo?

Don't knock on his/her door, bash it in, I hope this driver is found and the full force of the law comes down on them, good luck.

Because parts of the car were left at the scene so they know exactly what parts would have had to be replaced / fixed. I have an XC90 and mine was checked earlier in the week.

I think they have identified the car's outline using traffic cameras. But were probably not quite able to get a full reading of the number. I hope the cowardly owner is quaking in his boots.

Why were the police playing this the nice softly softly way by inviting the driver/owner to come forward?
A death needs a measured response but a quick whizz round all owners of the suspected vehicle type could've been seen as more pro-active or was there a cost to the public purse involved that they were trying to avoid?

An observation, this is the route to the ferry crossings at Poole. Have they checked the bookings/CCTV at the Port?
It is hard to understand why there is such a short run to the Verwood turn and why the slip road has not been extended so traffic does not have to enter the main carriageway.

Whatever vehicle it was I pray it's found and along with it the driver. However, I hope they are not caught by the police as that will only afford them the soft justice this country seems intent on! Let's hope it's an angry group of individuals with justice at heart. After all if it was a genuine mistake then you stop and deal with it. Although you can't bring people back you can at least acknowledge your mistake. Fingers crossed and I hope the family get some comfort soon.

This is not a common car. Are the police working with the DVLA on this? There can't be that many registered in a 50 mile radius.

Who can guarentee it had UK plates? This is the route to the crossing of the channel, could it not be another countries vehicle?

No, I don't think there is to Jade's family. What a callous comment.
Isn't this what a local newspaper should be reporting? This is still fresh in our minds, her friends are still hurting and her poor family not even started on their grief. Maybe some comfort can be found in the reporting of this driver still being searched for. I despair truly in how heartless and unsympathetic some people are.

There are 45,000 XC90s in the UK according to the howmanyleft website. So more that you may expect?

There is a fault in logic here. If the driver volunteers to hand himself in he'll still be prosecuted as much as if he doesn't.

Something seems wrong to me. If a car was involved in a serious collision like this then there must be broken off parts of the car left on the carriageway. Enough for the police to give an exact colour not just "a light one". It's like they are acting on witness statements instead of actual evidence.

There are lot of clever people giving the police advice on here.

It wil take 99% perspiration and 1% luck to locate the offending vehicle and then have to prove who was driving.

Turtlebay says...

They'd also need to prove that those Volvo parts weren't already on the carriageway from a previous less serious shunt.

Oldalbanian says...

I suspect the Police havn't a clue with this one which is why they are claiming they will hunt down the supposed driver of the Volvo a\t all costs in the hope he/she will intimidated into giving him/herself up.
Sadly in the eyes of the media the driver has already been found guilty before it ever gets anywhere near a court which makes it even more difficult for the driver to come forward. If there was no debris from the Volvo found at the scene then the driver may been unaware of any actual involvement - there is only an obligation to stop if you are involved in an accident not if you just witnessed one.

I do hope they are found. But in a world where there are cameras every where why can't they find it. Police rely on the public in 90% of cases to solve. But this is ridiculous, they are going to knock on the door of 15000 people plus it could be from another country! What a joke.

Meaning what - that it's quite reasonable to sit tight after you've just mown down and killed an innocent girl - even stopped long enough to ascertain that she was very seriously injured and possibly dying before driving away?
Yes there is a fault in logic - yours.
In fact you are wrong. Failing to report an accident and other ancillary offences are added to the main one of causing death by careless driving.

I agree Mister Grimsdale. The driver of this vehicle must have known that they hit someone, it is time for them to 'man up' and show some conscience over the death of a young girl, anything else is cowardice of the highest order.

Sadly this is an accident that has been waiting to happen with emerging traffic having to filter into to other vehicles legally travelling at up to 70mph along a dual carriageway without sufficient distance for it to accelerate to similar speed and which,in this case, could hardly happen anyway due to the seemingly minimal power of the scooter the poor girl was riding. (should low power/speed vehicles be allowed on 70mph limit roads? - I remember the days of "no loitering" signage)
So quite what the actual circumstances of the accident were perhaps only the driver of the Volvo, which the Police I now see say knocked her off initially, can likely tell and as much as we quite rightly condemn that person for driving off we must not blame them forthe collision itself as it is quite possible that she pulled out into their path at too slow a speed and too close in front for them to avoid the collision that seemingly caused the drivers of following vehicles that nightmare of all too late seeing somebody lying in the road in front of them.
Likely we have all driven through that section some time or other and made sure that we are in the outside lane to allow the filtering-in of slower traffic or,knowingly, modified our speed accordingly,
BUT
not everybody knows the junction and if, as the commentator above suggests, they were heading for the Ferry and so obviously not inclined to hang around for the Police and miss their sailing because of an accident they would anyway argue the fault of the Road Planners and/or the poor girl biker who was likely killed by following traffic and not them anyway.
Quite why any rider or driver should have to negotiate that short stretch of 70mph Motorway, in effect, to get from Ringwood to Verwood is the ? that needs answering near above all and so let us all hope that appropriate Temporary Signage at least comes out pdq to minimise future risk. (50mph local limit!?!?!).

Ah, but only 25,000 registered by the end of 2007. Also, the police may be able to eliminate dark coloured ones and possibly also certain models.

No not callous, just saying it as it is. Have you read the article about the lad in Manchester who should have been celebrating his 16th birthday? 10 years on and they still haven't caught the person who ran him over and killed him despite them knowing the make of car that did it!
