Signage scheme to aid motorists in Dorchester

NEW interactive signage guiding motorists to car parking spaces is being planned for Dorchester.

Members of Dorchester Town Council’s planning and environment committee received a presentation from representatives of Dorset County Council for a proposed car parking guidance scheme in the county town.

Matthew Williams from the county council said the scheme was a precursor to the proposed Dorchester Transport and Environment Plan (DTEP), aimed at improving traffic flows through the town.

He said: “It’s trying to remove unnecessary vehicle travel across the county town.

“It will involve interactive signing giving the number of spaces in key car parks within the town, hopefully allowing drivers and visitors to the town to make an educated guess as to which car parks are empty and which car parks are full.”

The scheme will be funded by the Department for Transport and will see signs placed at entrances to car parks as well as key approaches to the town.

A similar scheme was implemented in Weymouth ahead of the Olympics.

Mr Williams said it was hoped the first phase of the project would be installed ahead of the summer season with the second and final phase being completed in the autumn.

Councillor Tim Harries told the county council representatives: “It’s very welcome, we look forward to it.”

fair enough,
but more street furniture needs to be thought-out with care and perhaps the council need to stop the huge large lorries still going through the centre of town,
also deal with the constant lazy parkers who block south st, high west and east st near all the traffic light controlled junctions on both sides and cause traffic chaos. lazy lazy lazy

'A similar scheme was implemented in Weymouth ahead of the Olympics.'
And a fat lot of good that did.
