Police in East Street, Weymouth town centre
A MAN has been taken to hospital with serious injuries following an alleged assault in Weymouth town centre.
Part of East Street was closed for several hours as police dealt with the incident.
A 64-year-old Weymouth man has been arrested on suspicion of assault.
A Dorset Police spokesman said: “At approximately 3.45pm on Saturday officers received a report of an alleged assault at an address in St Thomas Street.
“A 58-year-old Weymouth man was taken to Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester and treated for serious, but not life threatening injuries.”
A local resident, who did not want to be named, said he understood that the assault may have been a stabbing, although this has not been confirmed by Dorset Police.
He said: “About three police cars and a van came hurtling up East Street.
“I saw one man come out of a house with police officers and his hands and wrists were covered in what looked to be towels.
“Then another man was bundled out of the house by police and arrested.”
Forensic teams were at the site, and a stretch of East Street at the Market Street end was closed off to traffic while officers investigated.
The road reopened at 5.45pm.
Weymouth and Portland Borough Councillor Ray Banham, who represents Melcombe Regis, said incidents of this type are ‘unusual’ in the town centre.
Dorset Police are not looking for any witnesses in connection with the incident.
