Eddie Mitchell plans restaurant and bar by Sandbanks beach

PLANS: Eddie Mitchell PLANS: Eddie Mitchell

DEVELOPER Eddie Mitchell is proposing to build a strikingly modern restaurant and bar within the main car park at Sandbanks beach in Poole.

He has submitted plans for a three-storey building with views across Poole Harbour on the site of a council-owned bungalow near the car park entrance.

In 2006, Mr Mitchell put forward ambitious plans for a 100-metre high spire with an observation deck called Skywalk Tower on the site of the crazy golf course at Sandbanks. The scheme was later withdrawn.

Andrew Flockhart, strategic director at Borough of Poole, said: “The council has registered a planning application for 89 Banks Road to demolish the existing building and replace it with a three-storey bar and restaurant.

“This application will be dealt with by our planning team.

“The land in question is owned by Borough of Poole and includes a former lodge which is occupied by a tenant.

While the council has been notified formally that an application has been submitted on land the council owns, we have not been contacted in recent years by the applicant for a discussion about this matter.”

Mr Mitchell’s company Seven Developments specialises in luxurious contemporary seaside homes such as the Thunderbird house in Branksome Park.

Ken Sanson, chairman of the Sandbanks Association, said: “We shall have to wait and see how the council deals with the plan.”

Why not add another level to be built by Dave Wells and made affordable housing. We could eventually re-name the town Mitchwells

So you get rid of one (subsidized) tenant and provide employment for twenty or thirty taxpaying people.
If anyone can see a problem with that, please tell me why.
Apart of course with those who hate anyone who risks a quid to make a quid.
They used to call them (the haters) commies or socialists.
Now, I think, they are called Occupiers.

A restaurant would be acceptable and could become an asset to sandbanks, but "bar" sounds ominous.

In order to avoid noise nuisance and anti-social behaviour, there would have to be severe restrictions on licensing hours, and at no time should the establishment be allowed to be only a bar - i.e. food must be served right up until closing time. Amplified live music must be forbidden and recorded music must be restricted to very low background levels.

Hopefully the "distressed" company that is Seven Developments wont be building this. Based on the number of charges in favour of West Register, it seems most of the "iconic" properties have been repossessed by the bank.

So a restaurant we cant afford to go in then ? No sound - No alcohol ?

I didn't say "no sound" and "no alcohol" - I just wouldn't want it to turn into a club style bar after food service stops like certain places in Bournemouth. I have no objection to people having a drink there and I didn't say anything about price.

It's not going to be cheap anyway - consider the location. Eddie isn't going to be selling pints at Wetherspoon prices in Sandbanks.

I don't you'll ever hear of a Socialist complain about someone creating jobs.

What we complain about is jobs being cut for the sake of profit.

But if he invests a quid, then gets a quid back. Great.
Just as long as he pays all of his taxes to the wider society that help him create his wealth.
