Snow and ice causes roads problems this morning

COMMUTERS faced travel misery on West Dorset roads this morning as snow and ice made conditions treacherous.

The A35 from Bridport to Dorchester was backlogged with traffic with an accident at Askerswell House at 7.45am.

An ambulance attended but it was thought there were no serious injuries.

Numerous other incidents on the A35 were reported to police and on Eggardon Hill cars were stuck as drivers failed to negotiate the icy surfaces.

The A3066 at Melplash was also closed after a crash this morning.

Abbotsbury and Portesham Hills were closed off and police were issuing warnings of treacherous conditions on the Charmouth Road in Lyme Regis.

Journeys from Weymouth to Bridport were reported to be taking three hours.

Snow and icy conditions also caused chaos in the narrow lanes around Bridport and Beaminster.

Dozens of vehicles travelling through Broadwindsor to avoid the closed Beaminster Tunnel had to negotiate the tricky lanes in slippery conditions.
