A SHOPKEEPER has told of his shock after armed men attacked him in his Buxton Road store in Weymouth last night.

The two men entered the Costcutter store armed with a hammer and what store owner Roger Hayre believed to be a gun.

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said two 16-year-old boys from the Weymouth area have been arrested and are helping police with their enquiries.

The police helicopter and armed response units attended the incident at just before 8pm yesterday.

The men did not leave with any goods, Mr Hayre added.

The shopkeeper described how he 'grappled' with one of the men and managed to get hold of the hammer.

He said: "I had this guy coming at me with a hammer, and it was a case of me being hit or try to grab it off him."

Both men fled the scene empty-handed.

Mr Hayre added: "The police response was really fantastic."

Weymouth Deputy Neighbourhood Inspector Neil Wood said: “This type of incident is rare in Weymouth and I would like to reassure the public that officers are working hard to bring those responsible to justice.”

Witnesses or anyone with information are asked to contact Dorset Police by calling 101.
