Thug who stabbed Nick Verron with a screwdriver set to be released
A THUG who wrecked his victim’s life when he stabbed him in the head with a screwdriver will be released from prison next week less than three years after being given a seven-year sentence.
Jason Teelin will be free from January 11 while his victim Nick Verron continues his struggle to cope with the devastating injuries he received.
Nick’s mum, Sue Vincent, has condemned Teelin’s early release and said her son is serving a life sentence.
Legally most prisoners only serve half of their sentences behind bars with the rest served on licence in the community. Time spent on remand before sentence is also taken into account meaning Teelin will have served half by the time he is released on Friday January 11.
Sue told the Daily Echo: “It is not right that he should be released. I understand the law but that doesn’t mean it is justice. “Teelin will be offered all sorts of help and will be treated better than Nick.
“I hope he takes all the help offered to him and turns his life around.”
Nick was 25 years old and living with his girlfriend in Bournemouth when he encountered a group of youths in Roumelia Lane, Boscombe in July 2009.
Witnesses heard Teelin, who was 17, threaten Nick before stabbing him, causing severe brain injuries.
Doctors warned Nick’s family he was unlikely to survive but he started to breathe on his own and has fought to recover ever since.
His hearing, vision, speech and mobility have all been affected but he managed to walk a few steps unaided for the first time last month.
The Daily Echo has also reported how he is engaged and plans to marry next year.
He said: “It’s not right that he’s coming out of prison but I’ve got to look to the future and concentrate on getting better.”
He hopes to walk his fiancée, Faith, down the aisle later this year.
