Bring loud instruments to Bridport wassail

BRIDPORT Community Orchard will be involved in Potato Day on Saturday, January 12 in Church House from 10.30am to 3pm.

The group will have a stall with its calendars, and second hand books, DVDs and CDs for sale.

The next day is the big wassailing event on Sunday, January 13 at 3pm in the orchard off South Street.

Participants are being urged to bring lanterns or torches and such small loud musical instruments as drums, whistles, tambourines or cymbals for the ancient ceremony. This is the fifth year the group has organised the wassailing, a tradition to ensure noise scares away evil spirits and encourage good ones to provide a bountiful crop for the following year.

Helping the ceremony along will be the Wyld Morris Dancers.

Song sheets will be provided, admission is free and there will be hot cider and apple juice around the fire.
