Super-fast broadband arrives in Bournemouth
8:30am Tuesday 1st January 2013 in Latest
HIGH-speed fibre broadband is now available to the first homes and businesses in the centre of Bournemouth, BT announced yesterday.
About 12,000 households and firms are joining the high-speed revolution as engineers complete the investment in the coming weeks.
Bournemouth centre follows Southbourne, Westbourne, Winton and Boscombe in having fibre broadband.
The latest upgrade will take the number of premises in Bournemouth able to receive fast broadband to around 74,000.
And the total figure due to climb to more than 83,000 premises next year when Northbourne is upgraded.
Jon Reynolds, BT’s South West regional director, said: “BT’s fibre network is expanding rapidly bringing a boost for local economies wherever it goes. Research suggests that within 15 years fibre broadband could bolster the economy of a typical town by £143 million and create 225 new jobs, 140 new start-up businesses and 1,000 more homeworkers.”
Cllr John Beesley, Bournemouth Council’s leader, said: “Super-fast broadband is an essential building block to economic recovery and growth. It gives our local firms a boost and brings us a competitive edge in attracting new businesses, jobs and investment. Residents will also benefit from being able to do more, better and faster, online.”

But do fit a Gigabit network card to your PC to get the full benefit. 100mbps cards do not always give you the maximum speed.
BT behind the curve again!

So Charminster gets left behind yet again. How can you do Boscombe with all the druggies who won't pay for speedy broadband and Winton who has mainly Uni students and miss the bit between Charminster where people live.

It is high time that this country realised that BT are the stranglehold on broadband services as they control all of the infrastructure that was given to them by whatever government was in at the time.

Well BT, why don’t you come back and tell us when you have the whole 01202 area up to speed, instead of just cherry picking areas that suit your money making priorities.

Their 100mbps lines are1.5 Gbps ready for domestic use but they say there is not a demand yet. It would be a simple software change to up the speed with no new equipment needed.
The VM SuperHub is already capable of Gigabit speeds. In fact when they upgraded me to 100 Mbps all that was needed was 15 second remote firmware update to my hub.
The Chinese have developed 10 Gbps broadband which BT are testing in Cornwall.
