Police officers on Dorchester Road where an elderly woman was seriously injured
A PENSIONER is fighting for life after being in collision with a car on a busy Weymouth road.
The elderly woman was struck as she crossed Dorchester Road at around 4pm yesterday.
She was taken to Dorset County Hospital, where it is understood doctors were battling to save her life..
Her injuries have been described as ‘serious and life-threatening’ by police.
Traffic was re-directed late in to the afternoon as Dorchester Road was closed between Littlemoor Road and Old Station Road.
Police tape cordoned off the area as officers examined the scene.
It is believed the woman is a Broadwey resident and was in volved in the collision outside Broadwey Fish & Chips and P & M Read Florist shortly after she had called in at the florist.
A member of staff at the shop called an ambulance as soon as the accident occurred.
Mark Read, owner of the shop said: “She came in the shop for a chat, like she does a couple of times a week.
“I understand that she was crossing the road when it happened. One of my staff members called for an ambulance.
“Both of the people involved live in the village. Tt’s such a shame.
“The woman is a widow. She lost her husband a couple of years ago.
“The driver of the car was also elderly.
The car involved is a red Mazda 3, registered to a local woman. The car remained at the scene as police carried out examinations.
A spokesman for Dorset Police said: “We were called just before 4pm by the ambulance service. The location was outside Broadwey Fish and Chips on Dorchester Road.
“The pensioner’s injuries are life-threatening. She was taken to Dorset County Hospital and the next of kin are aware.”
He added that road closures were put in place on Dorchester Road and the road was closed for several hours while emergency services worked at he scene and crash investigators examined the area.

ohcetesrod, the article states the driver is a resident of Broadwey...so not taking short-cut at all, as Shazzam says, please don't pass opinion based on your assumptions.
.
We are all guilty off doing this.

Perhaps the Echo should not open comments on stories where there is such a strong likelihood of personal distress to the victim or relatives reading the comments.

A lady has suffered a serious accident here and I don't think it's the right place to make a point about the actions of pedestrians that may or may not be at fault or the street environment - I would suggest you write a separate letter if you want to discuss those issues.

.
Less the 100 yards from this incident is a set of traffic lights.
.
Just shows the high majority of us want to take the quickest/shortest route.
