UPDATED: Witness plea as pensioner dies following crash in Southbourne
AN ELDERLY man has died after the car he was driving was in collision with a parked van in Bourne-mouth.
Members of the public and paramedics gave the 75-year-old Southbourne man first aid at the scene in Southbourne’s Wick Lane, but he later died in hospital.
The incident happened at around 4.30pm yesterday, near the junction with Brightlands Avenue.
Wendy Grant, Dorset Police’s control room supervisor, said: “A blue Citroen car being driven by a 75-year-old man from the Southbourne area has collided with the rear of a parked Volkswagen van.
“The driver of the Citroen was given first aid by members of the public and then the emergency services at the scene, before being taken to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital.
“Sadly the driver of the Citroen died a short time later.”
No one else was injured in the incident, she added.
A spokesman said they could not confirm or deny that the man had suffered a heart attack at the wheel.
“That is a theory but we cannot specifically say,” the spokesman said.
“It will be decided by a post-mortem examination.”
Local police officers arrived at the scene at 4.39pm. Specialist traffic officers were then called in and closed Wick Lane at 6pm.
It was shut to traffic for several hours, but re-opened overnight.
An investigation into the man’s death and the causes of the collision is ongoing.
Anyone with information should contact PC Kevin Adlam, from Poole Traffic department, on the non-emergency number 101.
