105 affordable homes to be built in Bournemouth

A PROGRAMME of council house building will see a total of 105 new family homes built in Bournemouth.

Seventeen new affordable homes will be built at Craigmoore Avenue and Bradpole Road in Strouden Park but the council is refusing to specify where the other 10 sites are.

The council has been offered a Homes and Communities Agency grant of £1.695m to build the properties, providing it acts quickly and can sign a contract with the HCA by next month.

A report going to cabinet on Wednesday, February 15, states: “There is a significant and growing need for affordable family housing in Bournemouth. However, market conditions, reduced grant funding and slow new build starts have markedly reduced the opportunity to deliver against this need.

“Provision in recent years has been limited to smaller flats rather than family accommodation. There is a need for more family sized homes in order to reduce the amount of time that households with this need are waiting on the housing register.”

As well as building more family homes, the council is seeking to change its housing allocation policy so locals get priority status.

Councillor John Beesley, deputy leader of Bournemouth Council, said: “One of the council’s key priorities is to provide more affordable housing in Bournemouth.

“In particular, we are committed to, and acknowledge the need for more affordable family accommodation as well as actively reducing the wait on the council housing register for family homes.

“This opportunity to provide more council housing is one that we want to progress as soon as possible in order to secure the vital funding to allow us to deliver more homes for Bournemouth residents.”

Bit confused here. There are currently affordable homes and a community centre being built on Bradpole Rd and Craigmoor Ave , which are nearing completion.
Can't think where further properties on either rd can be built unless this is why a kids playground is proposed for the Queens Park Golf Course car park so that the one on the Strouden Park field on Bradpole Rd can be closed and the land built on.

I don't see how they can "refuse" to say where the other 10 sites are? Why should they be allowed to get away with that?

Are these going to be reserved for local families in need or are they for rich people who want second homes?

Ps, I know it says priority status for locals... does that work in the same way registering your kids for the school of your choice works?

Sorry you're wrong, Bournemouth is morally vacant.

Maybe if the council did not prop up (by sending people to them) landlords who buy family homes and rip them down to make tiny flats there would be more family homes around or maybe they could refuse the permission for them to be ripped down?. Will the houses be for sale or kept by the council?

Any chance of a serious comment on what is actually meant by affordable.Does the Council have a definition which it is able or willing to make public or is it now one of those meaningless phrases which is thrown into every discussion about housing because it is the right thing to say-and may swing the planning decision in your favour!

Unless the Council put in more money and will have to put the land in for free you cant build anything other than flats or very very small terrace houses for under £90K , having allowed for fees
I thought that they were making great play on the need for family houses with ammenity areas , used to be called gardens.
Mind you when you concider that one of their priorities is affordable housing yet when the proceeds of Terrace Mount sale was not used for cultural use they changed the rules so that no housing had to be provided and they allocated the money elsewhere
They also need to do this to enhance the capital program for next year which has been decimated from £45M this year to under £10M with an unavoidable resultant impact on local employment
