Car parking fees: Motorists' thoughts

PAY: Sam Spencer PAY: Sam Spencer

• Sam Spencer from Christchurch said: “I pay for 10 minutes twice a day to go and pick my children up.

“The car parks should have barriers and you should just pay for how long you use.”

• Mum Katie O’Connor said: “I do think the prices are too high when you have to go somewhere quickly.”

She added: “A lot of us need to get to the schools every day and are forced to pay.”

• Sue Sissen from Southbourne said: “I do think it is out of order to put the prices up.

“There should be some regulation to them.”

She added: “I go to Castlepoint to do a lot of shopping.”

• Caroline Deeming who is also from Christchurch said: “I think it’s too much at the moment.

“If they want to bring people to the town they have to keep the price down.”

For a lot of drivers the use of car parks and parking meters are a discretionary expenditure for part of their parking needs.
The best thing to do is use that discretion wisely and decide how much you are prepared to pay into their coffers.

Might it be possible for some of these mothers to park a little bit further from the school in a free parking space and use the extra time it takes to pick up their kids to get their recommended 30 minutes of moderate exercise? You can run with a small child on your shoulders or back or you can run with a pushchair or while your child cycles or scoots.

Because most kids at the Priory School don't live very locally presumably so not in 'reasonable' walking distance for a lot of them. They don't do catchment areas for most of their intake

The roads are so unsafe for kids to walk to school these days BECAUSE of the 'busy' mums racing to drop their little 'darlings' off at school.

When I went to school they where schools within easy reach of homes .
They have gone or been concentrated into one sometimes requiring ferrying of children.
Always remember one piece of advice my mother gave to me when walking to school on my own " If a Tank is coming get in someones garden out of the way" more of them about then than cars

I think the fact you drop off and pick up means you are never going to get a good deal on parking fees, why would they lower it when they know people will spend it... basic business.
