Mixed reaction to Ashley Cross Green's £360,000 refurbishment

SIX weeks after residents and business people expected to be enjoying their newly refurbished park in Poole, they can finally explore the whole green.

But are the trickling Victorian fountain, new petanque pitches, performance space and play area a boon for the area or a waste of developer’s contributions?

The £360,000 facelift of Parkstone Park or Ashley Cross Green was the focus of complaints from local businesses when Easter came and went and it was not fully restored to its previous glory.

“For this public amenity to be closed for six months was a disgrace,” said local businessman and resident David Tabb.

“At the very least, areas of work should have been sectioned off leaving the bulk of the amenity open to the public.”

Resident Bob Lister said he was “very disappointed”, there was not really a play area.

The new fountain was a great improvement but the water was filled with tree debris, he said.

The petanque pitches are rarely used and not very attractive with “horrible wooden fencing” and there were bare patches of ground and weeds, he added.

“Considering the amount of time the work has taken, it looked worse than before, but is it finished? I hope not,” he added.

However Winton visitor Geoff Beard found the public conveniences “presentable, clean and free” adding: “My congratulations also for the restored and fully-functioning fountain in the park.”

Jane Jones, who organises the annual Party in the Park, questioned where the money had been spent but described the play park as “wacky” and “interesting”.

She added: “It was a pleasure to drive past and see families enjoying it, because they were. It used to be dog walkers and office staff.”

Clive Smith, head of leisure services, Borough of Poole pointed out the work was funded entirely by developer contributions and the scheme was heavily influenced by local businesses and the residents, who were consulted back in 2007.

“We really appreciate everyone’s patience while the park has been closed and hope residents and visitors thoroughly enjoy the improvements we have made for many years to come,” he said.

There was a very extensive and robust Consultation process, why didn't the moaners say something then rather than leave it until it's finished - give me strength!!! IT LOOKS GREAT

I think it looks great too, and really good build quality. Although for the amount of changes it does strike me as odd it took so long.

Hate the traffic light system though, its put 5 minutes on my journey each way to work and i have to foot the cost of that

It's always good to see green spaces invested in. The park looks great in the pictures. However, the Borough of Poole have made substantial cuts that effect vulnerable people. It's a shame that some of these developers don't invest a little of their cash for services that affect some of the most vulnerable in society. That's one heck of a budget to spend. Some of that money could do a whole lot of good elsewhere.

It really looks lovely. Walked through it the other day and saw mums with young kiddies enjoying the sun, workers eating lunch on the grass. Really nice area. Well done Poole Council. I don't say that often, but in this case they deserve it!

The Park is a gem, and as soon as it has settled, with a dop of rain (wish!) to make the grass grow, it will look great! The children's play structures are well made, and look really fun for kids. Well done, Ashley Cross Village!

To describe the water feature as a fountain is a poor description fountains have jets of water.
A cascading water feature would be a more apt description.
Overall it will look good but it does seem a lot of expense.

£360000 spent on a park is a disgusting use of money regardless of where it came from. Much like the completely ridiculous "piece of art" in Pennhill that only serves as a object for dogs to urinate on.
What is wrong with our council and our so called councillors?
I know they will reply by saying that this money was ring fenced and allocated to these projects but what happens to the ten's of £000's of pounds that is supposed to be ring fenced for Social Care, Schooling, and Public Services.
When will someone actually stand up and say that yes we have a moral obligation to get our priorities right here.
Yes maybe the tarmac was a little tired in the park but did the Borough of Poole really need to spend £360,000??? to get what???
A park that we can be proud of??
I think you would find people were proud of the park already and happy to have a space that they could use.

living close by i love the park .. but whoever won the contract to do the work must be laughing all the way to the bank, i m in the building trade and i would have thought the work done could have been done for a fraction of the cost quoted ..
