‘A recipe for chaos’

CAMPAIGNERS and politicians have joined forces against massive development in the green belt.

Councillors have come up with a counter proposal which would allow minimal development.

But three West Parley families say the proposed developments could enhance the green belt.

On Wednesday a packed meeting at Queen Elizabeth's School, Wimborne, heard pleas from residents to keep house building to a minimum.

The district has been furious at the Regional Spatial Strategy(RSS) which seeks to impose 900 new homes on green belt land in West Parley, 700 in Corfe Mullen and 600 in Wimborne.

Della Edwards for Keep West Parley Green said her area would run into Kinson. "It would mean the wanton destruction of a community which still has all the essentials of a village," she said.

Expansion at the airport meant Parley Cross - already the busiest intersection in Dorset - would be even worse with no plans for road improvements.

"It's a recipe for chaos," she said.

Sheila Bourton of Keep Wimborne Green said: "Once (green belt) it's gone, it's gone for ever."

Planning consultant Steve Dring, acting for three West Parley families, said the homes could be built by infilling gaps. A riverside park with a cycle path to the airport would "strengthen" the green belt.

Councillors noted the proposal of their RSS Ad-Hoc Inquiry that there be no development in Corfe Mullen, minimal development at West Parley and moderate development in Wimborne.
