More motoring mayhem set to hit Weymouth

MOTORISTS face more traffic chaos after it was revealed that Swannery Bridge is to become one way for up to six weeks.

A county council spokesman said the bridge will be open only for eastbound traffic while engineers carry out re-waterproofing works.

But motorists leaving the town centre will be diverted onto The Esplanade and up Dorchester Road to Manor Roundabout and along Weymouth Way.

Traders have hit out at the latest disruption which they claim is having a disastrous effect on business.

The owner of Tans Unlimited in Great George Street, Jeremy Peel-Yates, said he is now considering rallying other business owners in the town to picket Dorset County Council.

He said: “I’m horrified and very, very angry about this.

“I think what needs to happen now is we need to have a physical protest outside County Hall – I think enough traders are angry enough about all these works to do that.

“How are people supposed to get in and out of Weymouth if they can’t access any of the major routes?”

The owner of the Fantastic Sausage Factory, Dennis Spurr, said he will now be asking the county council to contribute to shortfalls in his profits.

He said: “This is ridiculous. If the county council wants to do this, then fine, but I will be asking them to split half of whatever I lose in profits.

“If I’m £100 short on my takings I will be asking them to give me £50 back.

“Weymouth is already a mess without even more road works.”

It has also been announced that temporary three-way traffic lights will be set up at the junction of Littlemoor Road and Louviers Road this weekend due to ongoing work on the relief road.

And from Monday, a one-way system will be in operation on Abbotsbury Road for up to 16-weeks while a water main is repaired.

There will also be three-way temporary traffic lights at the junction of Rodwell Avenue and Rodwell Road from Monday onwards The lights will remain in place until October 5 while Southern Gas Networks replaces a main.

Dorset County Council’s strategic projects manager, Matthew Piles, said: “Swannery Bridge is overdue a new waterproof layer as it was last waterproofed in 1984 during its construction and waterproofing normally lasts 20 to 25 years.

“September is a good time to do the bridge works as it will tie in with the Weymouth Transport Package works on Westham junction as well as being out of school holiday time.”

Mark Perring, the project manager for Hanson, who will also be working on the bridge, added: “We have had to restrict traffic over the bridge for safety reasons.

“Although we have allowed six weeks for the work to be done, as it is weather dependent, we will be aiming to finish it in between three and four weeks.

“We will be working double-shifts and nights where possible to get the job done.

“The only alternative to one-way traffic was to close Swannery Bridge for two weeks, which we felt was not feasible because of the local bus routes.

“We will also be putting ducting in across the King Street end of the bridge and the Westham junction approach to the bridge will be surfaced during the waterproofing works, which will reduce the amount of time temporary signals are needed in these two areas.”

Questions about the Swannery Bridge work can be addressed to the project team by emailing weymouthtransportpackage@dorsetcc.gov.uk or calling 01305 221000.

I, for one, am willing to organise a protest drive up to DCC headquaters to let them know how we feel about this shambles. Please allow up to five days to get there, and take food, camping equipment.

What staggers me is the apparent incompetence of the management team dealing with the major works replacing & re-aligning the roundabouts and other road works for 2012.

Even if this is another afterthought / add on by some 'body' / organisation with no direct interest in the initial scheme, it demonstrates yet again that the planners are inacpable of joined up thinking.

Where is the evidence that a meeting was called of all organisations with any interest in the Highways and Structures relating to them before the work began, and where is the overall plan they all signed up to to co-ordinate their activities? The so called recent explanations regarding apparent delays in gas main repairs on BootHill only serve to suggest their is no clear activity plan / schedule with deadlines - just a muddle through!

IF there was an overall plan, why wasn't it published before the works actually started so that we the long suffering public could try to think / plan around it in advance, instead of being faced with crisis after crisis when new works suddenly materialise?

The inconvienience and subsequent MOANING would happen no matter when this work is undertaken, and if it wasn't, resulting in an unusable and decaying bridge, more of the same.

It seems that Weymouth has been now turned into a new attraction. Digger World Weymouth. For the best day out ever! An adventure town where you can see real diggers and so much more. Negotiate ever-changing road systems and learn the secrets of the coloured traffic barriers and cones. See the star attractions Wessex Water, Dorset County Council and Southern Gas Works performing.

It seems to me that the message here is let's not upset holiday makers and visitors by inconveniencing them during the summer holidays. Instead we'll wait until they've gone and just inconvenience the locals who have had to put with all the other hairbrained schemes put upon us by the council.

Am I the only person who thinks that traffic hasn't been much diffrent to usual? Yes there have been queues but nothing worse than usual, it always takes ages to get to and from Dorchester, thats why they are building a bypass, people should try City centre Birmingham or any road in Northampton at Rush hour if they want to see real traffic misery...it's not that bad here and it will eventually get better, get all of the roadworks done over the next 18 months and all will be well in this corner of Dorset

Agree completely with Mark and the other non-whingers. I have commuted for years to Dorch. Its my choice to drive as I havnt got the confidence to cycle on the main road. In this day and age if you drive, you have to accept delays. Its a fact of life. More cars on the road than ever before. A lot of local car journeys not really necessary - people too lazy to walk. It took me 8 hrs to drive up to Manchester last month, silly me for not taking the train ,I will next time. Its the people who drive for a living I feel sorry for.
Next time the moaners get in their car, why dont they ask themselves if they couldnt walk instead?

Why couldn't Westham bridge be re-opened for the duration of this work rather create massive inconvenience and costs for all concerned?

Or would that mean DCC having to spend a little more money and W&PBC missing out on overpriced car parking revenue.

Maybe the council should consider banning pedestrians from the cycle paths for the duration of these road works as there are bound to be many more cyclists than the elderly/deaf/arrogan
t/ignorant walkers can cope with.
As for the traffic volume, maybe some of the children might have to walk to school instead of being driven each way.
There, that should upset someone in almost every section of the community...

I had the same thought myself, also reverse the one way system outside of Wilko to allow direct access from the esplanade out and across Westham bridge. Even if Westham bridge was one way, and the current bridge one way traffic can actually go both ways! Putting in another few miles of diversion due to a one way route seems to be a current theme of Weymouth (see Boot Hill)!
Just think how long the route will be to get from Weymouth town centre, to Portland, no matter what you do you are sent on a huge diversion!

If the road works HAVE to be done, provide a sensible alternative.

So we are going to effectively have a BLOCKADE in place for anyone wishing to travel between Portland and Dorchester, as there is no mention on the above posts, of the fact that they are also going to Waterproof the bridge at Ferrybridge at the same time as Swannery Bridge, even though they have just recently caused six weeks of disruption due to re-surfacing at FERRYBRIDGE and the Beach Road - Surely someone with a brain cell could manage works to be done at the same time to offer the least inconvenience, as we will now have to leave Portland via roadworks at Ferrybridge, and have the following options - Go to the Temp Lights at Rodwell, ( or opt for a lengthy traffic jam in Lanehouse Rocks, which will meet with another log jammed roundabout at some point as you head to Dorchester ), OR, follow slow and standing still traffic via the temp lights in Rodwell towards Brewers Quay, and the Town Bridge, where you can again switch off your engine as you sit still in Traffic, and then go via the chaos of the Boothill Roundabout, and towards Westham, where you can then get stuck in the jam for traffic going into the seafront via Westham Bridge, OR at the Quay, you could opt to go via the seafront where all traffic out of Weymouth will head for Manor Roundabout, WHERE WE CAN ALL MEET UP and que as we trundle up Dorchester Road towards the Littlemoor lights, and when free of these traffic jamming hazards we are used to, can then head towards Dorchester, before again sitting in standing traffic waiting to clear the roadworks at Tesco / Football Stadium roundabout and traffic trying to get onto the roundabout that has been queing from Kingston Maurwood roundabout, and has no doubt caused Massive Tailbacks onto the A35 - if you followed this then well done - if you have another route, let me know, excepting the Coast Road Rat Run and the narrow local estate streets -May the FORCE Be With You

MarloweOS says...
7:19pm Fri 3 Sep 10

Running trains down the Tramway would be done once a week during the summer (like the steam trains) anyway. In which case you just send a 'wide load escort' van ahead of the train to prevent cars from getting in the way.

As for the other road work ****-ups, they should have just said "Sept week 4, every night we will be doing all of the road works, then opening the roads up during the day" and have them bring in every available person to do the work as quickly as possible. Rather than having several overlapping projects spanning months, with no sign of actual work being carried out. Skanska are out everyday, long hours including Sundays. I think I have seen DCC workmen on site once.

At 4.30pm yesterday the were only 4 cars backed up on Weymouth Way from Westham Road! Too many of us are lazy these days and for a two mile round trip will use a car. Just think next summer we will all be able to travel to Dorchester without any problem, holidaymakers will be able to come into town and travel through to Portland with no problems, the roadworks will be just a distant memory the town will be at peace and in harmony with the rest of Dorset, and once again Weymouth & Portland will be the place that everyone will want to come and spend all of there holiday cash.
Then come the olympics with the council blocking off every vantage point to charge holiday makers and locals alike wich have been free to walk on now become prime sites for raising extra revenue for 2 or 3 weeks just to screw the last penny out of you.

I still feel most left out of it all. Since all the roadworks started I have only been delayed on two occasions. This despite having to travel between Portland and Weymouth most days of the week and even at peak times.

PS: Best suggestion yet seems to be to re-open Westham Bridge. Mmmmmm! Let's see, wouldn't that mean creating more roadworks (and all the inevitable moaning) on top of all the other roadworks that are currently being moaned about in order to implement it?

Admittedly one of those occasions was made worse by the town bridge opening. The other was when there was two way traffic through Hope Square. That was solved by getting off the bus at Hope Square and walking the rest of the way.

It struck me this morning how easy it is to negotiate the two former roundabouts at Abbotbury Road and the Fire Station now the roundabouts aren't actually there.
Why not just stop work there immediately and leave two free-for-all junctions where drivers can (and will) sort themselves out?
Also, set up a camera and sell the footage to You've Been Framed for £250 a shot.

When I see Mr Piles face beaming out of the pages of the Echo, I realise it is because he is the only one happy with the chaotic situation on our roads.
It really is ridiculous to start so many jobs at one time and block so many roads. I was stuck in a long jam last Thursday by the fire station and saw there were just five workmen at that roundabout. Nobody was working on Boot Hill. Is this happening because the council is scared the government will withdraw the money unless they appear to start every job?
Having been to the original consultation at the Park Church, where most residents questioned taking out the roundabouts and were ignored, there was no mention of all these extra works that are causing such regular gridlock.
I and many others have no confidence in Mr Piles and think hes a bit like a man in the comfortable ivory tower at county hall marking a map with ever more pins. Have we any councillors who have the courage to do anything about it? They have been very quiet even Councillor Mrs James who is usually so verbose. Perhaps it is time they all were thrown out.

Think of all those extra greenhouse gasses for a change!
Because: a) it is not wide enough for the volume of traffic, b) the road bed is at least 3ft lower than the road it would have to join and then up a rather steep incline with risk of grounding for long wheel-base vehicles, c) at least three lamposts would have to be moved, d) there is no easy access to the bridge in any case for traffic from any direction, e) at either end there would have to be some form of traffic control, e) it would take roughly eight weeks to do the work and two roads would need to be closed at least part of the time, f) it would cost in the region of £2-3m.

Any more bright suggestions?
