It took firefighters from Burley, New Milton, Lymington and St Mary’s in Southampton about 90 minutes to extricate the seriously injured driver from the wreckage of her Renault truck.

The 38-year-old woman, who came from the Southampton area, was taken to the city’s general hospital by ambulance after the head-on collision with a Volkswagen Transporter MPV between Holmsley and the former Wilverley Post crossroads. She died on Monday afternoon.

A seven-year-old boy and a 40-year-old man travelling with her suffered cuts and bruises. A 10-year-old boy, thought to be a family friend, suffered head injuries.

A 44-year-old woman from Pennington, who was driving the Volkswagen heading south, suffered serious injuries to a leg and had to be cut free from her vehicle.

A 43-year-old man travelling with her was also injured, as was a dog. They were also taken to Southampton General Hospital. The dog was treated at the scene by a vet.
