Weymouth parking meter petition collects 1076 signatures

A PETITION against the introduction of parking meters in Weymouth town centre has gained more than 1,000 signatures.

It was started by Firoz Kanji, from Southill Garden Drive, and in under two weeks a total of 1,076 people put their name to the appeal.

The proposed parking metres would be introduced in Custom House Quay, Commercial Road, the Esplanade, Albert Street, Clifton Place, Gloucester Mews and John Street if the plans are given the go-ahead by the borough council.

Mr Kanji said he felt the petition had done ‘brilliantly’ and that he was ‘delighted’ with the support of the public.

He said: “This petition has gained 1,076 signatures and I’m still getting emails coming through from people who want to sign it.

“I could have got more signatures if I had the time.

“I always thought the petition would do this well because it’s an issue which effects everyone in the town.

“I’m really hoping that the council decide against these plans but I think it’s 50/50. It depends whether the people who signed my petition wrote into the council individually as well.

“I want to emphasise that this is a town issue, not a political issue. Once the free parking is gone, it’s gone forever.”

A recommendation will be put forward by borough councillors at a Planning and Traffic Committee meeting on Wednesday, March 31, at the council offices along North Quay in Weymouth.

The final decision will be made at a Management Committee meeting in June.

'The final decision will be made at a Management Committee meeting in June.'
I would like to be proved wrong but I suspect that the final decision has already been made and an order for parking meters is in the post.

Unfortunately these meters are necessary to prod the local population and tourists to change their habits and use the new Park and Ride at Lodmoor when the Relief Road opens.

I still say the chamber of trades idea for free parking for locals is a good one. Could the Echo note the names of those councillors voting against this sensible suggestion so that we can vote against them at the may election?

@cheesefarmer - I would go to the town hall and claim a refund - from this and your comments on other stories, the education system has obviously failed you...

Yes a great idea I drive out to Lodmoor from Portland park my car and then get a bus into town and then do the reverse when I want to come home, and I only wanted to nip into the bank.

@likeitornot - you pay money at the meter - the days of free parking are coming to an end - there will be a support payment for the park and ride and it will have to be subsidised by parking charges and its usage encouraged by these charges being high enough for modal shift to occur.

I think PortlandWilliam got it in one: People who want to continue the convenience of using a car for what are often unnecessary journeys have to pay.

CoogarUK.com, people who use cars already pay, car tax, fuel duty, etc, etc.

Yes they do, 585. Nowhere near enough as yet though to discourage those unnecessary journeys, it would seem.

Here we go again! Motorists banging on and on about how badly treated they are. Poor lambs! The cost of motoring has fallen in real terms in the last 20 years. But still they drone on seemingly unable to comprehend that they are the problem that has to be countered by whatever measures the council and other authorities can bring to bear. They demand easy access to Weymouth centre but their poor brains cannot comprehend that there is no room for any more cars so cars must be discouraged. Please the Good Lord, they might be banned altogether and then pedestrians can enjoy the town, the harbour and seafront without having to suffer the loutish behaviour of the wheeled fraternity.
