Quick-thinking volunteer saves Littlemoor Community Centre from fire

A COMMUNITY centre was saved from being burned down by a quick-thinking volunteer.

Colin Harmer was at home when he spotted a fire at Littlemoor Community Centre, which backs on to his garden in Canberra Road, Weymouth.

Mr Harmer, 58, who is the club’s entertainments manager, said he rushed to the centre after spotting a wheelie bin alight at the back of the building.

“I spotted the smoke from my bedroom window,” he said.

“I managed to put it out with a fire extinguisher from the hall before it caught the roof.”

“It was only by chance I was in, otherwise it would have caught the guttering and the leaves, and that would have been the roof gone and maybe the building.

“It could’ve quite easily got that far.”

Mr Harmer said he decided to act on the fire instead of calling the fire brigade as he thought the centre was about to catch fire.

He said he had seen youngsters playing with a large box of matches prior to the fire.

He is angry because he is arranging fundraising events for the centre and planning to host activities for young people.

He said: “There were children aged about 12 to 14 and they were playing with a big household box of matches at the side of the hall and in the play area. I saw them.

“The thing is we are trying to get the hall up and running.

“We’ve got a lot of functions going on.”

Mr Harmer said graffiti artists were targeting the centre.

He added:“It kind of makes you think ‘is it worthwhile?’ “We are trying to get some life back into the community and we’ve got various things planned, including stuff for children.

“But it seems people are doing their best to ruin our good work.”

Mr Harmer fears graffiti tagged with the letters ‘LMF’ are a sign of a new gang in Littlemoor.

But he is hoping youngsters in the area will be able to concentrate on events at the centre instead.

He said: “We’ve got activities coming up at Easter and we are talking about things for the summer holidays.

“They are too quick to say there’s nothing going on for them but when you try and do something for them this is how you are paid back.”

A Dorset Police spokesman confirmed they were called at 5.40pm on Saturday, March 6.

He said: “It is being investigated as arson.

“The bin was destroyed.”

Anyone with any information about this fire can call PC Nicola Grant-Jones on 01305 222222.

Well done Mr Harmer! People like you give me faith in human nature and the 'great' (not always!) British Public. WHY are these parents letting their kids run riot without respect for peoples property,or are they following parents example?. There are so many residents of Littlemoor with a great community spirit, what a shame they have to put up with this .
Name and shame!

What is it with Littlemoor when I was a kid back in the 70s I was always told to avoid going to Littlemoor as it was so rough, it seems some things never change

Littlemoor is not 'rough'! I come from a family who have lived there for 3 generations, We look after our own and I'm sure that whoever set those bins alight were probably kids from another area.

Its all of you do gooders constantly whinging on that give the place a bad name.

Mamma Media, if someone on the estate knows who did it, then tell the police, it is not likely that 'kids from another area' come to Littlemoor to play with the current facilities that are available.

I went to St Pauls in Bristol and felt safer than when I visit littlemoor (I have relatives in littlemoor). In Bristol I also saw less burnt out cars and cars on bricks and washing machines (amonst other rubbish) in the front gardens. Of course it ain't rough if you live there - you think it's normal. I would not have built the wemouth relif road - I would have just bricked up the littlemoor turning on Dorchester road and solved all the traffic problems at a fraction of the cost!

Reggie and Ronnie Kray used to look after their own as well.

Erm....I can tell you that kids from other areas do come to Littlemoor as we have more facilities than town or the park district. Who said anything about knowing who did it? ridiculous saying something like that. I'm sure if someone knew then indeed they would go to the police.

Trust me my friend, Littlemoor is not 'rough'. Your standards are obviously higher than most, I expect you have never wandered far from this town, far worse places in other parts of the country for example Manchester, London, have you never heard of these Citys? I think you are suffering from a bad case of 'Small Town (Small Mind)' syndrome.

And very loyal they were too. Your point is?

Who else would like to s**g Littlemoor off? The place has always been targeted and labeled as rough and I really have no idea why people seem to think its any worse than other estates in Weymouth. Its a lovely place to live surrounded by fields and on the whole very peaceful and quiet, we have a lovely community and I would never consider living anywhere else but 'The Moor'.
