Portland YOI prisoner found hanged

A prisoner who recently arrived at Portland Young Offender Institution has been found dead in his cell.

Ben Grimes, 18, was discovered hanging from the window in his cell at the jail’s induction unit, the Prison Service said.

The inmate, who had been serving a five-year sentence for robbery, was not on suicide watch or noted as a self-harmer.

A Prison Service spokesman said: “Every death in custody is a tragedy for family and friends and has a profound effect on staff and other prisoners.

“The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will be investigating, as with all deaths in custody.”
