YOUNGSTERS hotfooted it to Weymouth town centre for a morris dancing display called Dinosaurs Not Allowed.

More than 80 children and young people joined in the displays as part of the Cultural Olympiad programme for the 2012 Games.

Six groups jumped to their feet in St Mary Street, St Thomas Street, Hope Square and on the seafront.

Organiser John Clifford, from the Open Morris Association, said: “It went very well.

“There were so many people watching and there were lots of positive comments from members of the public.

“We also had public dances at various times during the day when members of the public could join in a dance.”

The Dinosaurs Not Allowed event was aimed at showing that young people were involved in morris dancing.

It was part of a regional programme called Count Me In as part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad of cultural events in the build up to the 2012 Games.

Six groups, aged eight to 23, came from across the south west for the extravaganza in Weymouth. They came from Taunton, Exeter, Bristol, Glouces-tershire and Swindon as well as Dorset.

Mr Clifford said: “A lot of people think morris dancing is just for old folk but that’s not the case.

“There’s very strong youth support in the south west.”

Now the organisers from the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Game hope to hold a similar event next year.

Mr Clifford said: “We hope to target schools for next year.”

Teachers and anyone else who wants to become involved is urged to call Mr Clifford on 07779 257096.
