WEARING red swimming hats and wetsuits or swimming costumes, 1,200 people strode into the sea at Bournemouth on Sunday and swam the 1.4 miles to Boscombe pier.
Organisers for the British Heart Foundation Pier to Pier challenge said they hoped to raise £85,000 through the event through the registration fee and sponsorship.
Ruth Thomas of BHF said every participant was given a medal at the finish line to thank them for taking part.
She said that it was not a race but participants could time themselves on the timeclock.
“We would like to encourage people to send in their sponsorship money as soon as possible because it will go towards the fight against heart disease research,” she said.
This year’s event was fully booked several months ago.
