TWO teenage boys were treated for hypothermia in hospital after borrowing a dinghy from Mudeford.

The lads, aged 13 and 14, were spotted in the water off Hengistbury Head by the Avon Beach CCTV operator at 7.36am on Tuesday.

They had found a surfboard on the dinghy and tried to reach shore on it.

But instead they ended up in the sea.

The crew of the Mudeford fishing boat Déjà Vu went to the rescue and Mudeford Lifeboat crew took the shivering boys back to Mudeford Quay.

There were they were met by Southbourne Coastguard Rescue officers and an ambulance crew who took them to Poole General Hospital for treatment for hypothermia.

A Portland Coastguard spokesman said: “They were quite lucky, actually. The water temperature was very cold and we had several incidents where people went in for hypothermia.”
