BUCCANEERS captain Jay Herne has an added reason to put one over Weymouth in their local derby at Poole tonight (7.30pm).

He wants to lord it over his landlord, Wildcats rider Terry Day, at the breakfast table tomorrow morning!

Herne lodges with Day, and the banter about who will end up being the ‘Kings of Dorset speedway’ has been flying around their Verwood household since the start of the season.

Weymouth currently top the National League table, 11 points clear of fifth-placed Bournemouth Castle Cover, and it’s the first mouth-watering clash of the neighbours this term.

Bournemouth Castle Cover’s skipper, whose side use rider replacement for injured Mark Baseby tonight, said: “A big rivalry has already built up between the two clubs since our team was formed over the winter.

“We want to win every match, but there’s probably an extra edge to this one because we have a few ex-Wildcats riders and most of their boys know our boys well.

“Terry and I have shared a few stupid jokes about knocking each other off, and I’m sure they’ll be a few sly elbows on the first corner.

“But we’re all responsible riders, so I’m sure that’s as far as it’ll go.

“Once you get out on your bike, you have to forget friendships. You want to beat everyone.

“They’ll be a bit of tension between Terry and I, and I definitely want to get the better of him so he has to cook me breakfast tomorrow!”

Day, Weymouth’s number two, said: “Jay guested for us against Plymouth at home earlier this season and when we were paired we got a 5-1 each time, so we obviously race well together.

“It’s different this time though. We’ll go out against each other and will want to beat each other.

“Jay’s going well and is a top man in his side, although I actually passed him at Weymouth.

“We go out in heat five and if I beat him, he can expect a lot of banter flying around in his direction.

“There won’t be so much if Jay wins because he’s expected to beat me, but if Weymouth win the banter will all be aimed at him, and he won’t be able to hide from it unless he goes up to his room to sulk!”

Day, in his third spell at Radipole Lane, added: “We’ve been running longer than Bournemouth at this level, and it’s great to have them as local rivals.

“Weymouth won the title last year and are top again, so we want to stay there and are capable of doing it.”
