Heavy wind and rain in the New Forest has resulted in the death of one of the three newly hatched goshawk chicks.

RSBP experts say the chick was probably blown out of the nest, 18 metres up a tree, on Monday night.

Nestcam footage shows the three chicks clambering to the side of the nest to get food but only two return.

A fourth egg is also yet to hatch and now looks to be infertile.

Naomi White, of RSPB South East, said: “Things have been tough for the goshawks over the past week or so.

"They’ve been battered by the wind and the rain, and we’ve lost one of the chicks.

“It’s distressing for people to see. Ideally, we’d hope for four, healthy chicks but this just isn’t going to happen.

"One of the reasons birds have multiple broods is to give them more of a chance of fledging some young, and the two remaining chicks do look really healthy and strong.

“They are being fed regularly by their parents and will have less competition for food, giving them a better chance of making it all the way to fledging stage.

"She’s also been making a real effort to rebuild the rather windswept nest, to keep them as secure and warm as possible.”

Over the last few days the female goshawk has regularly been seen adding branches to her nest by Daily Echo viewers. Several contacted us to say they feared something had happened to one of the chicks.
