A PUB closed for its links to drugs and crime is being refurbished and looks set to be renamed ahead of reopening in June.

Deacons in Boscombe was closed under “crack house” legislation after police found traces of drugs and said it was a hot spot for violence.

A spokesman for owners Admiral Taverns said: “We’ve recruited two business partners to take on Deacons and transform it into a popular community pub.

“They are currently redecorating the premises and plan to reopen very soon under its original name, The Ragged Cat. An opening date has yet to be confirmed.”

Steve Kent, head of Boscombe Traders Association, said he understood the beer prices would be increased.

Cllr Chris Wakefield, for Boscombe West, said: “If the owner markets it in the right way, and develops the food side of the business, I believe he can succeed.”

However the new landlord said the details of the refurbishment and future plans were still not confirmed.

Inspector Ashley Adams from Boscombe Police said: “Our officers have been working closely with the brewery to ensure history does not repeat itself.

“We are confident the new-look establishment will be a very different environment from the one we closed.”

Steve Wright, the council’s licensing officer, said: “The new ownership appears to be very positive.

“We will continue to work closely with the police and licensee to ensure the high standards expected are maintained.”
