Pond made into reserve

STURT Pond at Milford-on-Sea has been made a Local Nature Reserve by Hampshire County Council.

Situated just south of the village centre, the reserve includes reed beds either side of the Danestream, tidal Sturt Pond itself, plus lagoons and saltmarsh, all of which attract large numbers of birds.

The designation has been warmly welcomed by Tony Locke, chairman of Milford-on-Sea Wildlife Recording Group.

The designation means that Milford now has two local reserves.

Mr Locke said the Pleasure Grounds and Studland Common, owned by the parish council, had received their LNR status a fortnight or so ago.

The Sturt Pond reserve also features a bird watching hide, completed by the wildlife group last Thursday.
