Plans unveiled for new school building

SCHOOL leaders have unveiled plans for the third phase of a multi-million-pound redevelopment of a North Dorset school.

The Blandford School became part of a two-tier educational system three years ago and now accepts pupils from the age of nine.

Phase three of the redevelopment will begin in January with work to remodel existing buildings, and will include a new science area, changing rooms and IT facilities.

Construction work on a new building will start in June, with a studio for music and the performing arts, and a new entrance to the school.

A new dining area can be extended into the hall, and an outdoor terrace with large canopies will allow students to eat outside with views of the River Stour.

Head teacher Sally Wilson, told the Daily Echo that the development represented an exciting time for staff and students alike.

"The new building will extend our current provision. The hall has a greater capacity, and we'll have new studios for dance, drama and music," said Mrs Wilson.

Remodelling of sections of the existing building will start in January with work on changing rooms overlooking the school's playing fields.

Chair of the school's board of governors, Sue Rix, said the new building's modern design would serve as an inspiration to students.

"The students are very excited. They've been involved with the design and have all seen the plans, and are asking lots of questions.

"The development will create a more exciting and stimulating environment. The school is doing very well and I think the new buildings will raise the motivation of the pupils even higher.

"The designs fit in with the surroundings, and I think they'll be an asset not only to the school but also to the community," said Ms Rix.
