Time to get knitting

2:59pm Wednesday 24th September 2008

KNITTERS are being invited to get weaving to help Age Concern Dorchester.

Wendy Hilton, chief officer, paid tribute to the army of knitters of all ages who are busy creating bobble hats for a drinks company.

Innocent Drinks and Sainsbury are donating 47p for every bobble hat knitted to adorn the drinks bottles at the supermarket. The must-have accessory attracts customer attention and increases sales.

Wendy said Brownies, Guides, schools, craft groups, WIs, church groups and more are busy knitting and hope to raise more than £2,000 towards Age Concern Dorchester's winter warmth work to help older people claim benefits they are entitled to.

Last year more than 3,000 little hats were knitted in the Dorchester area as part of the 400,000 created nationwide.

Wendy said: "More than 2,000 hats have already been received, but keep on knitting as we have a target of 5,000 this year.

"We have already received some very creative hats, from a bride to a fairy and from very simple hats to one covered in minute flowery buttons.

"I am amazed at the skill and creativity of our knitters. However, you don't have to be a brilliant knitter as we want lots of basic hats as well.

"One lady has knitted more than 200. Poundbury Brownies have also been busy over the school holidays."

There are three patterns depending on skill and knitters can use their imagination to vary the details. Wendy suggests trying adding stripes or beads or pigtails - go wild.

There will be a prize for the most original little bobble hat.

Hats must be completed by mid-October and brought in or sent to Age Concern Dorchester at 4 Prince of Wales Road, Dorchester.

Call in for a pattern or phone 01305 269444 or check out the www.acdorchester.org website.
