Ghouls on film

GHOSTLY goings-on are sending shivers down the spines of museum staff at Poole.

They have captured images of a ghost in the machine of the CCTV at medieval Scaplen's Court, which has long been believed to be haunted.

However, this is no Civil War casualty or murdered maid, but a gent in a bowler hat, standing in the first-floor Solar Room of the old town museum.

He appeared on the CCTV screen, with his back to the camera, when the equipment was switched on at 9.45am and remained there until about noon.

When a visitor stood in the same place, the apparition immediately vanished.

Two museum assistants saw it and took photos of the screen, which shows a blurred image of the man's legs, but not the upper part of his body, which they could clearly see.

"I am normally fairly sceptical about paranormal activity so I was shocked when my colleague and I saw the ghostly figure so clearly," said museum assistant Gary Edwards.

"Viewing the CCTV images it didn't look as though visitors could see the man but we have previously been told by female visitors that they could feel a male presence in that room.

"We have taken a number of other photographs since to see if it was a trick of the light but it seems to be genuine," he said.

However, neither went up to the first floor sun room, which has graffiti from the Civil War period scribbled on its fireplace, and the ghostly figure has not been seen since.

"We have done a bit of research to try and find out if there's anything from the 19th century or early 20th century which seems to fit in. We couldn't find anybody who it might be," said Michael Spender, Poole Museum manager.

He added that groups which investigated paranormal events had recorded poltergeist activity in the museum.

Poole's historic museum, along with the 600-year-old Town Cellars, the oldest building in the area, can be explored as part of Dorset Heritage Week.

The Treasures of Poole event is on Saturday, September 13, from 10am to 5pm and free guided tours of Scaplen's Court take place at 11am and 2pm.

I too am sceptical of paranormal activity, especially if it is 'captured' by a low quality camera, taking a picture of a computer monitor showing an image from another low quality camera, in the week prior to the Treasures of Poole Event..
Good bit of PR by those involved, and hopefully it will entice a few people down to that end of Poole, I was always fascinated by Scaplen's court as a kid, it's a great place to visit.

Have they been drinking Newfoundland Screech? Perhaps they should put some water in it.

My partner and me once worked in Scaplen's Court for a large cleaning company. We held keys to the museum, and would start work around 4.30 - 5am.

We use to hear the odd creak of wood work as the building warmed up, however, one day I was working in the classroom which became very very cold (it was summer time, but early morning), but this was freezing cold. I heard girly giggling in the far corner of the classroom, with what looked like apparitions of girls in Victorian school clothes.

I called my partner, but when she arrived the sounds had gone, and the classroom was warm according to her.

An experience, and something I will always remember. We continued working there.

Am I sceptical, I do not know, do I believe in ghosts, I do not know. I just know what I felt and heard and saw.

I can't see anything on that image at all but would like to believe that it's true. I worked as a volunteer in the Gardens during my GCSE years, hoping to see something but sadly never did.

However, will definitely be trying to get to Scaplen's Court for the guided tours this weekend!

There were 2 places I remember: one was an old ramshackle building alongside the footpath which led past the playing fields of former Wimborne Primary where my Dad taught. That was meant to be a witch's house and going in was, supposedly, a guarantee of instant death. That was scary in a kiddie, bogeyman way. The other was Knowlton Church, which is as atmospheric as anywhere. Take a compass with you one day and step in and out through the side door a couple of times ...

Surely the first thing the staff would have done is go up to that floor to look for themselves? They're clearly having a laugh at the Echo's expense (easily done).

No prizes for observation,Emulated
. The report says it was 'agent in a bowler hat.' Poole Council are just trying to make his activity appear respectable by getting a bowler to add spin !
Poole Conservatives already have Leverett appearing as the Hare so maybe we can expect them soon to bring the Mad Hatter (in the guise of a bowler) to the Party.Perhaps, they will even get Tony Blair to join them, appearing as the Cheshire Cat .

I thought the idea of CCTV was to identify latterly any illegal goings-on.
So why no video footage of this?
What happened to it?

Finally, I have been able to make out this image, but I must admit, to me it looks more like a sozzled dog with a dog collar. If you take your lead by identifying the white spot in the centre of the screen as a shiny nose, you will be able to see 2 eyes either side and above this. Now let your imagination takeover...
