FOR almost half a century the Cotterills have been packing their buckets and spades and heading for Bournemouth beach.

Every summer the family book the same beach hut and stay in the same bed and breakfast in Alum Chine, keeping up an August bank holiday tradition started by grandparents Maureen, 73, and Charlie, 82.

The headline for this story came from 2CR listener Paul from Poole who won the Headline Game on the Paul Bunker Show

Come rain or shine, the family of eight travel to the Dorset coast from Stoke on Trent for their annual summer getaway.

Over the years Maureen and Charlie's son Stephen, 47, his wife Alison, 40, and children - Lindsey, 21, Emma, 16, Grace, 10, and Joseph, six - have joined the couple.

After spending yet another day at beach hut number 2076, under cloudy skies, Mr Cotterill Snr said: "We are steeped in tradition.

"My son has been coming since he was a baby and no matter where we all go for the rest of the year, we all like to have this week in Bournemouth."

Early riser Stephen goes for a morning stroll before joining the rest of his family on the beach, whatever the weather.

Mr Cotterill said: "I like the fresh air - it seems to do the world of good."

The family also meet up with Eileen Marsh, 88, and her son Kevin, 49, during their break.

Eileen and Kevin have stayed at The Fircliff guest house for more than 15 years and the entire group ensure they are booked in at the same time.

Mrs Cotterill said: "It's like home from home. We are all so comfortable we have a doze together after dinner!"

Mrs Marsh said: "Some people go abroad whether they like it or not. When the sun shines this is the best country in the world."

Lorry driver Mr Marsh said: "Bournemouth beats cheap package holidays abroad. With our scenery and coastline it's no wonder more people are holidaying at home."

Kath Black, who owns The Fircliff, where the group heads for their annual pilgrimage, said: "I have watched the family grow. When they stay it is like having a large family reunion.

"It's wonderful. Eileen Marsh is the first name in our guest book."

It's good that all the everyday things us locals moan about and take for granted are still appreciated by others. I wonder what the older members of the family feel about "modern" Bournemouth. Noce story.

Oh dear, that's so sad! Why not widen your horizons and try somewhere else for a change - you might like it! You don't have to travel abroad, there are fantastic places to see all over the UK.

I find it quite odd that they come to Bournemouth every year. They must lead pretty mundane lives to find Bournemouth so interesting year in year out. Look elsewhere, you are missing out on loads of interesting and fascinating places.

Why would anyone want to come here every year! Surely all theyre doing is see the town deteriate. There are no real attractions to bournemouth. I think theyre mad

Why are they different to anyone else in the where they choose to go.

How many of the Daily Echo readers go to Majorca every year, or go to Corfu every year, or go to Tenerife every year. Many I would say. I go to Cornwall every year. Why because we like it.

If the Cotterill's and the Marsh's are happy holidaying in Bournemouth then so be it. They must have found some thing good, or they would not keep coming back.

Thank you for choosing Bournemouth.

I think what's saddest is that folks choose to knock people who have found something they love to do, and are happy doing it year after year. I don't understand the reasoning behind the family's choice to go to Bournemouth time and time again, but I don't have to, and I'm sure they don't care what I or anyone else thinks.

Each to their own.

Except for visiting family, we try to always go somewhere different each year. But if some people are more comfortable with what they know, then it's up to them.

Well said. It's probably the same people here criticising this loyal family who also criticise Bournemouth for not having enough family attractions! These 'grockles'- i.e. income-bringing visitors - should be encouraged & also welcomed with open arms - no matter how many times they wish to return.
It shows despite what certain local whingers say this great town still does attract families & if local folk weren't so easily brainwashed onto the 'Knock Bournemouth' bandwagon, they might appreciate the town's good points as well.

Oh get a grip,
bournemouth is a good family place during the day. Though It could learn from the east coast resorts for family activities in the evenings( ps we lived in bournmouth for years so we are not grockles)
